This is no fault of ADP, I would want to use our software to it's full potential. [I would like to use it for] letting the employees have access to their records for changes to their address and to view their payroll records. I like that I have so much access to process payroll but I, feel the cost does not justify the use. It is pricey for what I am using it for and this is the decision of our President.

I feel Payroll is well suited and I also like Ascentis Self-Service (the dashboard). I'd like to see more widget functionality since we use that the most to communicate with all of our employees! I think NovaTime is fine to use and I feel I'd have rave reviews for it IF we could rely on the functionality of it and receive the utmost service level when calling into support. It's possible that there has been miscommunication when working with NovaTime support staff but on more than one occasion I've called in requesting a problem be resolved and I've been told it's resolved only to find out when running the next payroll that it isn't fixed. It's difficult for me to understand the full functions and rules within NovaTime because I don't see them, so the support staff needs to keep that in mind when communicating with customers. I've been satisfied with how the recruiting module and compensation module is, so far. (It's in the beginning stages for us).

  • It is very simple to process payroll, even from home if needed. I once processed the payroll from Japan.
  • I love that I can balance the payroll and send it knowing it is 100% correct.
  • I can process payroll as late as 6pm and have it back the next day.
  • I really like my ADP representative. I have had 2 and they are very knowledgeable and pleasant to work with.
  • Speaking of the ADP representative.......No matter who answers the phone, if my rep is not available, they are all knowledgeable and even through they are not my assigned rep, they are all pleasant to work with.

  • Our account representatives that are assisting us in implementing recruiting and compensation have been doing a great job at keeping in touch and following up with us.
  • I've received great support from Christian at Ascentis HR when asking for new ideas or other things that we can be doing to make Ascentis self-service more attractive to our users. (Widgets in particular)
  • I've not had troubles with Ascentis Payroll or HR and am satisfied with the consistent availability of those two programs and appreciate that updates and streamlining are of importance to Ascentis.

  • My biggest peeve is....and they are aware of this - a new state is sometimes very difficult to set up. With all the different classifications in states back east, it can take days to get it set up correctly.

  • An ability to automatically notify our employees through email/text and banner in ESS for expired or expiring employee documents
  • Ability to track variable hour employees for ACA requirements in a more inclusive way. Some way for the system to hold hours worked, during specific periods of time and notifying employees automatically when they are eligible for benefits due to meeting the hour and measurement period requirements.

I have a lot of experience and trust in this software package - actually any software package from ADP. The training that I have gotten over the years has always been complete and the representatives that I have had over the years are all EXCEPTIONAL! Looking back in the 20 plus years of experience, I can say truthfully there are only 1-3 persons who I would rather not have worked with at ADP. I find their customer service, and phone reps do their best to get the job done. This makes my job easier in the process.

This rating would be a 10 if it were not for some issues we have been having recently with the benefit carrier connections. The carrier connections are critical for us so how these issues are resolved will be key in our renewal decision.

Overall, it is fairly usable for the average user as long as he/she is at a computer, laptop or a larger tablet and has the ability to view the employee self-service webpage on an internet browser. Because it does not have an app or other mobile interfaces right now, it makes it difficult for it to be useful for most of our employee population who utilize their phones to access the internet. As for the HR professional who would be also working on this interface, it is somewhat easy as about two-thirds of the screens are fairly user-friendly and easy to navigate. Nevertheless, it still leaves about one-third of them that are not as user-friendly and would require more technical knowledge to figure out how to best use them.

As I've mentioned several times in this review, Ascentis has the best support I've experienced when it comes to payroll systems. They are very responsive and can typically get you answers in just a few hours at most. You don't have to call and wait on hold for 45 minutes before talking with someone that doesn't know anything about your company. You don't get transferred around and have to re-explain your issue to every new person you speak with. I can't say enough good things about Ascentis' support team.

First, to clarify our "in-person" training was done mainly through Web-X meetings and conference calls. It was the closest thing we got to as far as an "in-person" training for this software. However, for the large majority of it, this type of training worked out well. We were able to share our screens and the trainer was able to share his/her screen. We could follow along with what we were doing in our database in real time and see how different functions worked and how manipulating our information could produce different results. It was also nice in that it provided for real-time results if something hadn't been coded correctly or we were having issues as to why something wasn't working the way we thought it should be. However, it did have some downsides in that we often had to rely on a conference phone and that made it difficult to hear people on both sides. Also, sometimes the trainers had internet difficulties when working from home and that caused issues with the WebX meetings.

Ascentis HR has a number of online training videos to watch on a number of different topics. I gave it a lower rating because there is not much interactivity with the videos and it seems to cater to really only one or two learning styles. Plus, one has to be pretty motivated to go to a separate area to access the videos and then pull up a specific one to watch it and then learn. From my experience, people know that they are there, many just don't take the time and effort to go find them and actually watch them - especially since the username and password are different from their normal username and password.

It was very easy to implement, but the customization pieces should really be fleshed out in order to determine the full need of an organization at the time of implementation. I believe if a little more time was spent on the requirements, the recruiting module would not have to be customized again at a cost at a later date.

Alternatives Considered

ADP Resource

ADP is just a well known brand and is fairly affordable. Compared to other software such as Workday, it was a more affordable price point for our budget. However, if we had more resources and time to examine, Workday seems to offer a strong alternative to ADP in terms of payroll, HR, and financial systems. Overall though, there are more consultants knowledgeable about ADP which made it an easier choice for us

(Had vision from prior in-house system, this was the only vendor that had what we wanted in this area.)6.   • Positive - ADP has simplified our payroll batches as the payroll side is quite intuitive.
  • Negatives - Because of a lack of internal coordination, we've often had to have multiple phone calls to resolve issues.
  • Positive - The reporting within the tool has allowed us to be more efficient during our financial audits.

  • All were motivated, and the implementation was smooth with 3 parallel payrolls to test calculations. Therefore, no burn-out during implementation phase. Mentioning, as often staff have anxiety about system conversions.
  • Our Payroll Department was able to focus on providing better customer service internally and externally.
  • We used the standard Ascentis ESS, which was easy to customize with additional company policy notes and links to company specific information for employees. Employees had access 24 x 7 which was important to our 24 x 7 manufacturing work schedules.
  • Decreased labor costs in the Payroll Department due to Ascentis Payroll System efficiencies.
  • With the Ascentis Payroll being a SaaS operating in "the cloud", our department was able to respond to employees after hours increasing our customer service. Also, this structure made Disaster Recovery planning much easier.
