ADP TotalSource

ADP TotalSource is my company's PEO. Being an HR department of one, the support I received from the was worth its weight in gold. They have so many resources already in place that I was able to make use of instead of researching and creating myself. One part of having them as a PEO that I wasn't a fan of, was the limitations we had in choosing our benefit carriers. They had contracts with two health carriers to choose from. So if we weren't happy with rates, there was only so much room to negotiate, at the carriers knew that.

Cornerstone OnDemand

Cornerstone OnDemand is well suited for large organizations with plenty of money to implement all the features you want and need. It is also well suited for organizations that need all of their modules, all the security features, and all of the various built-in reporting. It is also well suited for organizations with a full-service IT group to implement daily data loads and single sign-on. Cornerstone OnDemand is less well suited for small organizations without the IT support and for organizations who only need a simple place to serve up content. Cornerstone OnDemand is also not well suited for quick yet detailed, on-the-fly reporting.

Pros

  • The prebuilt reports were excellent
  • TotalSource came with the Employee Service Center support - the best part of TS
  • The software integrated with our time keeping system which made payroll a little easier

  • Cornerstone OnDemand is very robust and has a lot of room as the firm grows. This is a big plus if you are starting out and want to add features as you develop your training program.
  • Cornerstone OnDemand is a cloud-based, hosted system. This means updates are implemented in the background, no server administration, up-time is excellent, and everything is secure and backed up. In addition, Cornerstone provides two mirror sites where you can test updates and other concepts you would like to implement without affecting users.
  • Cornerstone OnDemand is a total HRD/HRM package with several different modules. For large organizations who have a lot of HR needs, Cornerstone offers all the support you need. The modules are designed to work seamlessly and share data according to the needs of the organization.
  • Cornerstone OnDemand has a very strong security system. Security parameters can be set on people and objects. This allows a lot of strength and flexibility.

Cons

  • While the prebuilt reports were great, I would have to contact TS in order to get a custom report. This only happened a few times because like I said, they had a variety of prebuilt reports that fit my needs
  • iReports was implemented and it became more difficult to find employee paystubs and find YTD pay

  • As Cornerstone OnDemand becomes bigger, it is difficult to deliver enhancements with the same speed.
  • Cornerstone OnDemand needs to increase number of developers to keep same level of enhancements, quality and speed.

Cornerstone OnDemand in general has very good usability. It is easy for end users to start using it. We don`t need to provide any trainings for learners or line managers. At maximum we can create one pager with general information. It is easy to search trainings. You don’t need to know the ID or full name of training.

It’s surprisingly slow for a SAAS product. When you click on links, there’s no hourglass or waiting indicator, so it’s difficult to tell if the system is going to respond.

My issues have always been understood and resolved. I don't feel like I'm explaining it to someone who doesn't understand the system. Often times they know the issue and have quick fixes from their experiences.

Dig deep on what your current processes are and how they match up to Cornerstone OnDemand functionality. It's not that the Cornerstone OnDemand is bad, it just the amount of work it requires you to do to get your current data to fit into their system.

Alternatives Considered

Paychex is probably the worst system I have used. It's not intuitive at all and is lacking in so many key areas of a good HRIS. I think UltiPro is a system that stacks up against ADP TotalSource the best. But again, ADP TotalSource will be what I choose because of their customer service for not just me but our employees. Their support is second to none!

Our shortlist was: Litmus, Success Factors, Absorb, and Bloomfire. Our primary business need was learning management

a) Bloomfire – seemed more of a social networking, knowledge management tool, not really for learning management and so was eliminated.

b) Our initial choice was Success Factors, but we couldn’t come to terms on the contract. They weren’t willing to work with us on contract language for future purchases. Workday (who we use for HRIS) used Success Factors as their LMS at the time, but I understand it's since been decommissioned.

c) We didn’t know about Cornerstone at the time we selected Success Factors, but would have picked them otherwise. We learned about them after we had ruled out Success Factors. We ended up choosing Cornerstone as it had the best integration with Outlook and the highest capability to integrated with our HRIS (Workday) and to customize. You can change the display of the interface and put things where you want to go. It is highly customizable for branding and business

  • Employee satisfaction with the Employee Service Center was high
  • TotalSource's employee support is like having a PT HR employee on staff!
  • At times, if I needed a tailored report, it would take time to get ADP to build it for me and get it back. Not a lot of time, but not as easy as doing it myself.
