I think it all depends on what the client is looking for. I mean we have been using Vantage for the last 6 years and it has come a long way from where it started. The nice thing is we have been able to grow with it and configure things to how we need them to be for our business. So each business needs are going to be different and ADP Vantage can keep up with those needs.

Pros

  • ADP Vantage is great because all the data is in one location, there is no exporting or importing employee data. For employees this is also a benefit as it's one place to go for everything they need, to record time, update tax withholding, setup direct deposit, update contact information etc.
  • I absolutely love the report writing, especially the new tools that ADP has introduced such as the "Field Grabber". It makes it so easy to create and run a quick report as needed. Even our least experienced users have commented how easy it has become to use reporting in ADP.
  • The New User Experience, (MyADP) although is new and not yet completely rolled, out will be a great benefit for employees and for managers who have 5 or less direct reports. The design is so user friendly where there are no instructions needed.
  • Its so easy to manage the user access, and make changes as you need it. The security gives you lots of flexibility. Just today I had a Practitioner who was going to take over the responsibility of a second location's payroll. To give her the correct access to the second location took less than 2 minutes to set up and apply to her profile.

  • Expense calculations – the whole accounting for equity awards is pretty technical and not real easy to follow. It does a good job of calculating GAAP expense for each award.

Cons

  • The product is sold as fully integrated but it is not. The Recruiting Management module isn't considered part of Vantage by the ADP team members. And, the look and feel of it is very different than the other modules. And, it is very difficult to use.
  • The Performance Management module is designed to support a very traditional approach to performance management and it is very rigid. It's very difficult to support more progressive ways of developing performance and keeping employees motivated.
  • The configuration/implementation was extremely painful. Implementation consultants vary wildly on their knowledge of their own modules and almost none of them understand how what is built in their module might impact configuration in other modules.
  • Five months post go-live we continue to have significant issues. Many of which seem to arise when updates are made by ADP.

  • We had to have an external consultant oversee and manage the software for us. It wasn’t easy enough for us to use on our own. Some of that may be because of the feeding of information between EASI and UBS Onesource software which is used for participant management of equity awards.
  • We just have read capabilities in-house and the ability to set-up new users. Anything needed to uploaded we have to send to our consultant, Plan Mosaic, to upload.
  • While some of the reporting is good, some is not that good. You are able to generate reports in PDF and download into Excel. However, some of the reports in Excel would dump a lot of unnecessary information and require you to do a lot of manual clean up.

I personally like the Equity Edge software better. The reporting is better and the software easier to use. The reason we didn’t continue to work with them is we didn’t want to use E-Trade as captive broker.

A lot of set ups vary from company to company so parts of our training we found it difficult to relate it to our processes. They have TONS of training modules available and a streamlined process for what you should complete and when. Would have been helpful to have onsite training for how much one pays for the system.

A lot of decisions had been made already when I joined. I thought it was a fairly smooth process. You just need to make sure that you do a good job of auditing all the awards that are transferred from system to system. We did a reverse stock split that caused challenges with rounding of shares.

Alternatives Considered

There is good and bad with any software that you choose. In the selection process, our organization had narrowed it down to SuccessFactors or ADP Vantage. Both had their strengths. In the past, I've used JDE, SAP, and Optimum. Most of my experience is with JDE. Honestly, I could give you pros and cons with each one of them

Return on Investment

  • Saves more time for personnel to actually help the employees
  • Self-service is great for employees
  • The reports and management of data is great and very useful

  • It saved us a full time headcount of someone manually tracking all options. Most public companies have someone dedicated to stock plan administration, or at least a 0.5 FTE. We didn’t have that luxury here.
  • However there are costs. We have to hire a consultant Plan Mosaic to work with the system that costs $2k/month. I am not very happy with them. They are a really small shop, so you don’t have a lot of people you could call to get stuff done. Only 1-2 people can get things done for you.
