I think it all depends on what the client is looking for. I mean we have been using Vantage for the last 6 years and it has come a long way from where it started. The nice thing is we have been able to grow with it and configure things to how we need them to be for our business. So each business needs are going to be different and ADP Vantage can keep up with those needs.

Sage People

Sage People is well suited to small-medium sized organizations that would like a cloud-based HR solution with no need for servers or software to install. I really like the fact that it is based on Salesforce.com so you know that it will be extremely reliable and well supported. It is very flexible and customizable and can work in complex HR arrangements. For example, we have employees in nearly 60 countries and multiple HR jurisdictions and we are able to make it work for us. However, if you are moving from a traditional or customized HR system there may be a steep learning curve and you should be prepared to spend a lot of time setting up and customizing to your needs, in addition to training.

Pros

  • ADP Vantage is great because all the data is in one location, there is no exporting or importing employee data. For employees this is also a benefit as it's one place to go for everything they need, to record time, update tax withholding, setup direct deposit, update contact information etc.
  • I absolutely love the report writing, especially the new tools that ADP has introduced such as the "Field Grabber". It makes it so easy to create and run a quick report as needed. Even our least experienced users have commented how easy it has become to use reporting in ADP.
  • The New User Experience, (MyADP) although is new and not yet completely rolled, out will be a great benefit for employees and for managers who have 5 or less direct reports. The design is so user friendly where there are no instructions needed.
  • Its so easy to manage the user access, and make changes as you need it. The security gives you lots of flexibility. Just today I had a Practitioner who was going to take over the responsibility of a second location's payroll. To give her the correct access to the second location took less than 2 minutes to set up and apply to her profile.

  • It is completely web-based so both employees and HR administrators can access the software from anywhere with no need to install special software.
  • Sage People is based on the Salesforce.com platform so it has a robust API which is well documented and easy to integrate with other systems.
  • Sage People can integrate with almost any payroll system using their "Payflow" interface
  • Customer support is responsive and helpful.

Cons

  • Although Time and Payroll are integrated, it's not integrated enough. The data sometimes doesn't "flow over" to Time and we have to call ADP to have them push it through. When you are on an employee's record in Payroll, you can go to any other part of there profile such as Tax Withholding, Deductions, etc...which is great, but if you want to go to their timecard, you have to go into Time and do another search to find the employee then open the timecard.
  • The audit trail in the system needs to be enhanced. Currently you can run a report to get an audit trail on user activity, but not all screens are auditable. If I need to know who made a change to the Time Information screen, and when the change was made...I am out of luck.
  • Some records should not allow backdating the effective date. This causes us problems with data validity. For example, Direct Deposit, you can't change history so this screen should never allow you to enter an effective date of a closed pay period that already was paid.
  • The Time Off Request feature has lots of room for improvement. One of the biggest issues we have is that a manager will Approve a request then later realize they need to Refuse it, or the employee needs to Retract it. The system gives you the option to open the Approved request then you can Retract or Refuse it...but that action does nothing. Common sense would tell you it removes the PTO day, but it doesn't. To remove a prior Approved PTO day you have to go to a completely different area, which the average user would never find.
  • Our employees earn an annual amount of PTO based on their hire year. The system should not allow them to use more PTO than what they earn for the year, but this is not an option. We can easily put a limit on the balance, but not on the amount used.
  • Garnishment module of Vantage is not user friendly, very difficult to use. They do have a WGPS service you can purchase, but if you want to do garnishments in house without paying extra, its a struggle.

  • We found out-of-the-box configuration and fields for employees and salary to be lacking and had to do extensive customization especially for salary.
  • Basic salary functionality like uniform pay grades and automatic calculations based on FTE are lacking. This makes simple things like COLA adjustments to be a chore.
  • It is very easy to customize, which is a "Pro", but also means that you might have to do quite a bit of customization to get it to do what you'd like.
  • The employee Self-serve ("WX") interface can be a bit slow at times.

Usability

when required to move from PayForce to Vantage we expected to have greater functionality and reporting - did not expect to be forced to move to a product that was not ready, provided less functionality, required more dependence on ADP Service Rep for day to day function and cost more - was a big swing and a miss for ADP

A lot of set ups vary from company to company so parts of our training we found it difficult to relate it to our processes. They have TONS of training modules available and a streamlined process for what you should complete and when. Would have been helpful to have onsite training for how much one pays for the system.

Alternatives Considered

Our organization chose ADP Vantage HCM in order to eliminate the on premises solution of PeopleSoft as well as to outsource payroll processing. The cloud based, fully integrated solutions that the Vantage product line offers allows us to have a true "one-stop shop" for all our HR systems.

We moved to Sage People from a 20+-year-old internally developed HR software. We also evaluated other HR software such as Kronos, SAP, and BambooHR. Ultimately, we chose Sage because of the extensive support they provided to us and the ability to customize to fit our organization's needs. We loved the fact that they were completely cloud-based and built on a reputable platform (Salesforce).

  • Licensing can be expensive especially for HR administrator licenses, and non-profit pricing isn't as good as we would hope. However, in the long run, costs are saved because there is no need for internal infrastructures such as servers or client applications
  • Integration with multiple payroll providers saves time and money and reduces the chance for errors.
