For a small employer, with very little turnover and few benefit options, ADP may be too costly for the benefit. There are many affordable payroll providers available for small organizations.For large employers with many benefits options, employees in multiple locations, multiple tax jurisdictions and varied pay types (salary, hourly, commission, etc), ADP is ideal. The extended customer service hours, extensive resources for international pay, and capability for multi state taxation is crucial for an international employer.

Pros

  • Highly trained customer service representatives. When calling, wait times are usually short. All representatives have a broad base of training so most questions are resolved right away. There is an extensive 'back office' of more experienced team members to address the more complex issues and anomalies. Recent training updates including the common sharing of representative email address for ongoing follow up access.
  • Learning opportunities are available through videos, webcasts, PDFs , conferences and virtual conferences. I have found the quarter and year end videos to be especially helpful. I am appreciative of emails with links to articles with payroll relevance, saving me the time to research.
  • Reporting capabilities are extensive. There are many standard reports that provide the base report with opportunity to customize fields, sorting, etc. And they can be saved for future use, with additional edit capabilities. Also available are fully custom reports, built by the the user, with the option of guidance from an ADP report writer. My experience includes a completely custom created report that I now use on a regular basis. The personal attention and investment of time to get my report exactly as needed was much appreciated.

  • The end user interface is streamlined and straightforward.
  • The search functionality is extremely powerful and intuitive. Users are able to quickly locate training resources.
  • The reporting capabilities for managers and administrators are easy to use and allow you to pinpoint exact details you need.
  • Cornerstone allows you to structure your product to model organization needs; we have 14 divisions based upon our subsidiaries.
  • Cornerstone hosts user groups quarterly so that you can learn best practices from others. This has been extremely helpful.
  • Cornerstone's client success center really helps troubleshoot your own issues before you have to contact support.

Cons

  • Some of the fields are not intuitive, meaning that when filling out things like phone #s and SSN's, the cursor does not automatically move to the next field once it is completed.
  • The performance management section doesn't fit our needs like we had hoped. We do not use a rating system for reviews and the ADP system is set up to be more advanced than what we are as a company. There's no way that we can change this so far and that's unfortunate.
  • Because ADP is such a huge program it runs a lot on cookies/cache. Because of that we have employees who really struggle with their passwords and the fact that we have them punch in and out on a public computer. Previous users and multiple tries with passwords seems to impact the next person who logs in.

  • We would like the ability to change due dates right on the user's transcript for overdue training. We can change to a future date, but we can not add a date that is in the past. We need to go through the proxy enrollment steps, which takes longer.
  • It would be nice if Dynamic Proxys were editable. If we want to change a one-time training to a recurring training, a whole new proxy needs to be created.
  • We would like more options for the fields that are displayed in the org chart and user profile - currently we can select only between Division and Position.

Very user-friendly. I am a "millennial" who's rather tech savvy and understands the basic navigation functions and was able to pick up on this very easily. they've mimicked features of popular websites we use every day to make the admins and users familiar with navigation and completion.

It’s surprisingly slow for a SAAS product. When you click on links, there’s no hourglass or waiting indicator, so it’s difficult to tell if the system is going to respond.

The instructions from the recruiting agency on how to use the system was pretty straightforward. It provided step-by-step procedures on where you would need to log in your hours as well as what you would need to highlight (i.e. regular, overtime, etc.) detailing the type of hours that were worked overall. The handout also provided some pictures of the application

Either assign more than one specialist to the implementation process, or assign less clients to the implementation specialist. The process requires attention to detail and the ability to test and re-test as well as verify the information. It also requires a lot of back and forth between the client ant the implementation specialist, so they need to be readily available during the whole implementation process.

Alternatives Considered

The previous system I used was an old version of PeopleSoft that was so far past needing to be updated that we were not able to make the modifications that we needed. It's not really a fair comparisson because the systems are so dramatically different. ADP has an all in one opportuntiy where there was only the HR portion in PeopleSoft. We did not have any recruiting or payroll opportunties in the system. When it's available, I highly suggest you go after it and have it all in one

Our shortlist was: Litmus, Success Factors, Absorb, and Bloomfire. Our primary business need was learning management

a) Bloomfire – seemed more of a social networking, knowledge management tool, not really for learning management and so was eliminated.

b) Our initial choice was Success Factors, but we couldn’t come to terms on the contract. They weren’t willing to work with us on contract language for future purchases. Workday (who we use for HRIS) used Success Factors as their LMS at the time, but I understand it's since been decommissioned.

c) We didn’t know about Cornerstone at the time we selected Success Factors, but would have picked them otherwise. We learned about them after we had ruled out Success Factors. We ended up choosing Cornerstone as it had the best integration with Outlook and the highest capability to integrated with our HRIS (Workday) and to customize. You can change the display of the interface and put things where you want to go. It is highly customizable for branding and business

Return on Investment

  • We are now able to focus on other areas of our business instead of trying to build reports manually.
  • Our payroll is now in our hands. We know the process, where the money is going and how to resolve issues for our employees.
  • The organizational charts have saved our owners and all of our managers a ton of time and effort knowing what their orgs look like. We didn't have anything like that before that wasn't completely manual.
