AdStage

AdStage is great if you're an agency or an in-house marketer managing a lot of ad budget, a lot of campaigns, or a large number of clients and you want to get the day-to-day tasks cleared to focus on higher-brain-stem tasks. Bid and budget management are replaced by rules. Holiday sales are replaced with flighting. All of your team members can log in, access their accounts, set up their reports and have them send to clients without having to lift a finger.

Yahoo! Advertising

I would recommend Yahoo! Advertising in complement to the other two major SEM engines, Google and Bing. Paid SEM campaigns are the bread-and-butter of the digital marketing landscape. With Yahoo!'s display capabilities emerging, it's finally catching up to the other platforms in terms of sophistication. It integrates readily with marketing management platforms (like Kenshoo), and data export is a breeze. I would not recommend Yahoo! for the first deployment or market-testing phase of SEM, but getting up and running for a moderate budget will cover a clients' bases and ensure the best audience saturation.

Pros

  • AdStage has a great onboarding process. We have a dedicated support rep who walked our entire team through each of the three major sections of AdStage, talked about use cases and even recorded the training so we could provide it to other, future team members.
  • The real power of AdStage for us is in the Automation. You can set up rules for when to do things like increase budget or raise bids on certain ad channels. If something is doing well, push more money to it without ever logging in. Likewise, if something is tanking it gets turned off without you having to be at your computer. It frees up our team to focus on more strategic, creative endeavors by handling the "grunt work".
  • The ability to create custom metrics is a real plus. Sometimes, even with systems as advanced as Google and Facebook are, they just don't understand how to set up what you want to measure. Maybe I want to know the cost for all purchases across apps and my website? AdStage's custom metrics let me design that, and then use it in my reports, dashboards or rules.

  • Offers extensive solutions to reach a high volume of users and create new reach outside of major networks like Google and Bing.
  • Provides unique ways to differentiate advertisers in top positions on search results pages.
  • Creates unique tactics to utilize on display networks (carousel and video takeovers).

Cons

  • We were with them in the earlier days and when they were growing larger. We experienced some of that pain with pricing changes that didn't feel quite right. But, they've fixed this now.
  • We didn't really see the usefulness at times of optimizing some of the channels through AdStage, but we loved the reporting features they had for the channels.
  • Better tiers for payment and what fits into those. Again, these are being addressed much better now.

  • The Gemini platform needs to be more selective when pulling reporting and offer data further back than 1 year of performance.
  • The Gemini user interface does not do well with displaying unique metrics (impression share results, competitor results, etc).
  • Yahoo! Native compatibility with Doubleclick Search needs to improve instead of using dummy keywords to pull in total front end metrics.

Likelihood to Renew

AdStage8.0
Based on 1 answer
AdStage has been great and the only reason we wouldn't renew is if we decided to build this all out internally for API access. But, customer services is great, the product is great and I'd definitely recommend it.

Yahoo! Advertising8.0
Based on 1 answer
I selected an '8' because, for a marketing professional, the Yahoo! Advertising interface is straightforward and approachable, with expected controls and capabilities. However, for someone without experience or familiarity with building and launching campaigns, there's definitely a learning curve to establish a baseline knowledge. There's documentation available on best practices, but it's not nearly as extensive or detailed as other platform trainings

Support

AdStage10.0
Based on 1 answer
AdStage had great support. They got back to me quickly every time, they always had or found an answer for what I was looking for, they took my feedback well, and they were knowledgeable with the platform and any issues I had. I have worked with a lot of other companies that are slow and AdStage definitely isn't one of them.

Alternatives Considered

I'm actually not aware of a ton of direct competitors for what AdStage is doing right now. As mentioned before, they have some great integrations for deep analytics, they bring all of the different vendors together in one central place and they have some awesome automation tools that I have not seen around.

Yahoo! is part of a larger SEM/marketing platform suite and environment. I selected it to round-out a client's efforts and to ensure we have the biggest reach possible towards prospective clients. It's also another way to gather data on advertising performance and gauge audience interest. In terms of reporting, it provides similar data points to Bing and Google (clicks, costs, impressions, CTR, CPC) and some conversion tracking. Data exports are straightforward and can be highly granular, at the campaign or account level, and with time segmentation. For seriously robust or sophisticated data collection and analysis, Google can't be beaten, but for the standard digital marketing campaign, Yahoo! is a safe bet.

Return on Investment

  • It's saved time for me to easily build out campaigns in Facebook and LinkedIn quickly and in scale
  • It gives people the option to get direct API access to multiple channels without having to build it all in-house
  • It allowed some great optimizations for LinkedIn which allowed us to use our spend there better

  • Its impact is overall positive
  • Helps us get extra traction by using what's working well on AdWords
