My business works with clients from a variety of outlets, with budgets ranging from six figures down to triple digits (not kidding). There's a TON of analytical software out there, so speaking as a guy who has worked with them all (or at least quite a few) if your client is on a budget – particularly a startup – AWR is a great program to use. They've been around for a while, the desktop version is pretty bug-free and updates in real-time, and it's budget conscious.

Pros

  • It only costs $49/month, which is great for clients that are working with limited budgets (they're cost-conscious!)
  • Its ease of use – I've worked with plenty of cloud-based rank tracking programs before, and AWR was by far one of the cleanest and easiest to navigate. I could use it on my iPad and the user-touch interface was pretty seamless.
  • The info is updated in real-time. We were able to show our clients their live data while in meetings. It made us look good, and it made our clients feel better about the service they were paying for.

  • The Explorer tool integrates with multiple keyword databases, so the results are more comprehensive and representative of the true search landscape. It also provides important insight into the environment that surrounds the keywords or topics you search for, such as the stage in the customer journey that keyword best fits or the level of competition within the SERP that you can expect to go against. These are valuable features when determining which keywords to optimize your content for.
  • Knowing where you stand in relation to your competitors is important for understanding your path for growth, and the Market Share and Rank Comparison features within Conductor Searchlight allow you to determine the areas you dominate and areas of potential opportunity at a granular level.
  • The reporting feature allows you to quickly and easily compile notable performance shifts and disseminate these shifts to your team, along with analysis and relevant context. Keeping the larger organization abreast of your efforts allows everyone to benefit from the optimizations you make, and Searchlight makes this process easy.

Cons

  • The ability of the program to produce dashboards in web page format. While it can do this, it saves them out as HTML files on your hard drive or cloud server, which makes it super hard to share with others.
  • The cloud version is a bit more expensive, which offers the same tools as the desktop, which I found a little troublesome and it didn't make sense to me.
  • Their customer service was a little lacking. I had a couple of general questions and I was on hold for about 15 minutes...which isn't good when you're in the middle of a busy workday.

  • I would like to see a tab for the training courses in the main bar. This isn't easy to find at first.
  • More filters based on areas of interest/profession would be helpful
  • The ability to download information from workspaces into one report that includes graphs or export to powerpoint would be amazing.

As a new hire last year, it took awhile to be on-boarded due to the lack of primary users at my agency. I had to learn the platform on my own and I was able to quickly do so with the extensive training/support materials. Their customer success team is very responsive and definitely care about your progress in understanding all the capabilities of the platform.

I definitely recommend their professional services for getting started. It got our account 90% of the way to where we needed to be in order to gain value from it. In fact, I'd suggest that with few exceptions (such as, you have a staff that is already familiar with the platform and doesn't need any help), the quick start services over the first 30-90 days should be a standard part of onboarding with any new client. It definitely got us to the point of gaining ROI from the solution and, in turn, will make it easier to justify renewal and continued investment in it.

Alternatives Considered

There's a ton of competition for AWR but in all honesty, if you're on a budget, I'd advise going with this one. It gets you pretty accurate results, updates their info in real time, and all for about $49/month base price. It's pretty good software for the money that you're paying

We have used BrightEdge, gShift Labs, Lindex, and SEO Clarity. Major reasons for we moved away from gShift for better reporting capabilities and have since enjoyed innovation and superior tracking features and user interface of Conductor. The customer service teams and relationship has also kept us with Conductor as a tool. The major differentiation is ease of use and organization of data outputs. I came into an organization with SEO Clarity and moved to Conductor because it was difficult to learn where to find the information I was looking for in the SEO Clarity interface. Lots of data but not always useful and not easy to find

Return on Investment

  • It stayed within our client's allotted budget (which drives more business our way down the road!)
  • Updated information in real-time assures our clients that they get the most accurate information possible, as quickly as possible.
  • It's been only slightly detrimental to my workflow (which is one little drawback of the program) sometimes I have to enlist the help of a keyword generator (because i find the one with the program a bit lacking)
