Adyen

Adyen is a good tool to manage payments and to switch between different currencies. Easy to understand, despite the poor design, it allows you to manage payments and billing easily. It is pretty useful to refund payments and check the status of refused one. You can trust list users and allow them to pay when they got locked by the system for any reason, or you can understand if the reason for rejection is due to an issue on the user side and advise accordingly.

Stripe

It's well suited for businesses who wish not to have credit card processing machines and who use a cloud-based accounting software for easy payment collection. For a brick-and-mortar business who collects payments at time of service, you may be best suited to evaluate one of Stripe's competitors.

  • Stripe integrates perfectly with our cloud-based accounting software, making collecting payments easy.
  • The dashboard and UI are simple enough to log into and process card transactions via the phone.
  • The reporting features are nice and also integrate into a BI platform we use to provide us with in-depth and accurate reporting of all credit card transactions we do.
  • Their fees are reasonable and in line with their competitors.

Cons

  • When looking for payments details such as last 4 digits card (for instance), it would be great to display more details about the transaction in the results, as the full name of the card holder.
  • The layout is not the best one. There is a lot of room for improvement when it comes to website design.
  • A functionality to disable the credit card details instead of deleting it at all.

  • The UI is easy to navigate and understand, however if the homepage or dashboard was simplified it could make Stripe an even better solution than it is.
  • Unlike some of it's competitors, it comes with no hardware to process transactions. Currently this is not an issue for the way we do business or run credit card transactions but as we grow and expand we may have a need for mobile-based hardware devices in the future.
  • Although it's a competitive product, we'd welcome lower fees and quicker balance transfers to our main banking account from Stripe.

Alternatives Considered

I have used several tools to manage billing and payments in my job. It was not my choice in my company to use Adyen but we are pretty happy with it. It can be integrated very well with the other tools we use in our job and it is reliable and safe.

They are very similar. PayPal charges you monthly to have the ability to set up monthly payments. I had a problem with PayPal earlier this year where it would let me set up a recurring payment but then would not let me charge my customer the following month. It's actually a pain in the ass to have to go into PayPal every month and bill your clients on the billing cycle day. Stripe does it automatically.

Return on Investment

  • I cannot see any negative impact.
  • It is good to synchronize the payment details that come from Adyem in our CRM and this allows us, now, to manage refunds and subscriptions in there and get any action done in real time and recorded in all the platforms.
  • Quick and reliable it is a good tool to be used for managing and checking credit card transactions details.

  • Positive: Overall I believe we've collected more monthly recurring charges from subscribers.
  • Positive: It's been easier to perform basic customer service tasks like cancelling subscribers quickly or issuing refunds.
  • Negative: Slow impersonal customer service has often sent us panicking during a crisis, and made us turn to hiring web developers to try and resolve issues that were not related to web code - so whatever gains we've made in collections have been negated by costs incurred when trying to compensate for poor customer service.
