Aerohive Wireless

Aerohive works amazingly well in warehouses and offices. I have not tried it outside as of yet.

Aruba Networks Wireless LAN (WLAN)

It is possible that we have a bad luck with the deployment. However, It is capable to perform enterprise-level security to fit some of the organization's standards. With Airwave and other tools, it's easy to manage and administrate your wireless environment. Make aware of the IPsec tunnel from each user to the controller if you are using Clearpass for NAC. If you have a remote office with local resources, you will need controller or IAP to route traffic locally. If you have many remote offices, you will need to deploy controllers or IAP in each office, which lead to additional cost and management.

Pros

  • Ease of deployment - Setting up an AP is easy as powering it on, the controller finds it. Apply a policy, and move forward with your day.
  • Ease of management - Policy updates and firmware updates are point and click
  • Amazing Radios - Signal strength is unparalelled for enterprise wireless environments.

  • They offer both a controller-based and controller-less option. This allows customers of all sizes to deploy a wireless network without the upfront cost of controller hardware. A controller can be added later.
  • Aruba also offers Airwave which is a single management point for all AP swarms in the environment. It offers many reporting features as well as visual RF maps displaying heatmaps of the AP signals and client positioning.
  • The Aruba Access Point we have (224s and 225s) also offer both PoE and external power supplies for those smaller deployments that may not have PoE capable switches.

Cons

  • More visibility into your product certification process. - Certifications are a great way to show employers you're serious about the products they have. Not all of us have the means to go to a class just to take your test. Ruckus provides this much easier than aerohive, free online training, and 60 bucks for a test.
  • Account execs need to be more engaged, resellers provide better turn around than aerohive account reps.
  • Add task templates, or at least make them easier to access if they're available.

  • Remote access points were a little tricky to get working and requires a controller outside of the two we were currently using. On the plus side they have an inexpensive controller that worked for our needs.
  • I feel Aruba needs to offer more training in a hands on lab environment.

Alternatives Considered

Aerohive is an amazing product. Cisco wasn't able to stack up when it comes to controller redundancy, backup, etc. No need to have special software to just have a secondary controller... which drives down the cost.

Comparing the Aruba wireless solutions to the big dog of the networking industry is not easy. The Cisco offering has great depth of features and capabilities, but when it comes to the major determining factor it starts to even out more. Pricing is where the rubber hits the road and we feel that we get great value from Aruba for the cost.
