Aerohive Wireless

A large segment of the Aerohive client base is the education market, which is very different in terms of agility and immediate support needs of financial institutions. They seem to focus more effort on their wireless AP solutions, which I have only rarely tested. When it comes to remote access, the solution is still relatively expensive due to the upfront hardware purchase, though recurring costs are fairly low.

It is well-suited when organizations are scalable and the enterprise is growing in terms of users. This is the best product for that scenario because it gives flexibility in terms of performance and availability. Its performance-ranging capacity makes the product more tempting for wireless users.

Pros

  • Ease of deployment - Setting up an AP is easy as powering it on, the controller finds it. Apply a policy, and move forward with your day.
  • Ease of management - Policy updates and firmware updates are point and click
  • Amazing Radios - Signal strength is unparalelled for enterprise wireless environments.

Cons

  • More visibility into your product certification process. - Certifications are a great way to show employers you're serious about the products they have. Not all of us have the means to go to a class just to take your test. Ruckus provides this much easier than aerohive, free online training, and 60 bucks for a test.
  • Account execs need to be more engaged, resellers provide better turn around than aerohive account reps.
  • Add task templates, or at least make them easier to access if they're available.

This access point does not usually randomly shut off. It can't happen but it's generally due to a power over ethernet failures which would could be considered a user error.

Proper pre-planning would help you avoid any issues. Any deployments at scale should be double-checked.

Alternatives Considered

Aerohive is an amazing product. Cisco wasn't able to stack up when it comes to controller redundancy, backup, etc. No need to have special software to just have a secondary controller... which drives down the cost.
