CA Agile Central

Our core engineering team in our division pays for the application. As a company, we pay $35 / month per person for the Enterprise Edition. In my team, we are living with it because it’s free to us.

If I were to evaluate new tools, I would look at Pivotal Tracker again, and also have a look at Altasian. They have a big product suite that some of the team has used before.

Pros

  • Effective Sprint planning : Sprint planning can be done using Planning Poker in AgileCraft by clicking Team > Manage > Other > Estimation Games very effectively for distributed teams.
  • Team Capacity Allocation Report: After tasks are created at team or program level, the report from AgileCraft cab be pulled and can be verified that no team member is under or over allocated. A report can be generated by navigating to Team > Manage > Assign Tasks.
  • Effective Requirement trace-ability: To maintain requirements trace-ability follow the steps below:
  • Upload test cases against the story/requirement. once uploaded test cases will be visible under that story
  • Execute Test cases in AgileCraft and mark them as Pass/Fail based on the actual outcome
  • Based on test results, The acceptance criterion's can be marked as “Pass” or “Fail” & if marked failed corresponding defect can be logged & can be attached with the story
  • So against each story we can easily see whether all test cases been executed or not & which acceptance criterion's are failed & how many defects are in open or close state.
  • Daily Scrum: In AgileCraft, the option to run a daily stand-up is available from Team > Manage > Daily Standups. Selecting the sprint number opens the daily stand-up meeting window in which each team member's tasks are visible and hours can be burned against them. Conduct Scrum meetings in AgileCraft, and burn each associate hour against the tasks created during the meeting. The burn-down chart can be generated & viewed during the stand-up to check whether the team is on track.

  • Portfolio Planning features allows all team members to understand how individual stories and tasks roll up to larger milestones and releasable features.
  • Highly customizable visual feedback - CA Agile Central allows each user to create their own work space and also allows creation and sharing of custom visualizations for the product and engineering teams.
  • Artifact Edits are a straightforward mix of inline editing of common fields and detailed updates of entire artifact records.

Cons

  • Program level metrics & Scorecards: Though we can generate few metrics & scorecards but I feel few more metrics can be added like velocity acceleration , team improvement rate.
  • QA team often come to me regarding the test case tagging, it is very difficult to search particular test case here so I feel advance search feature should be provided.
  • Program Planning: In Agilecraft program tracker if we have lot of multiple dependencies & where situation demands to look at our features holistically across the entire landscape of the solution, it did not provide proper support.
  • Also If I need to take a call at which sprint need to be optimized I did not get that decision making enablement here.

  • Portfolio management... poor graphical presentation of portfolio (as compared to Aha! for example).
  • Release management... the model and implementation are not cohesive, require many manual steps to maintain release plan integrity, seems to support SAFe at the expense of other, more Agile, practices.
  • Visualization, in general... minimal capability for user-defined charting (unless you want to do SDK programming), and most canned charts offered are with an old internal SDK that doesn't support new features
  • My big gripe is that in the two years we've had the product, an unbelievably SMALL amount of work appears to have been done. Glaring gaps and inconsistencies (conceptual and practical) continue to go unaddressed, while apparently great effort is being spent on new features having marginal utility.
  • Based on this experience I have concerns for the ability of CA to bring the product up to modern standards and to restore its conceptual integrity after years of piecemeal incremental improvement. For a large development team, they don't seem to be delivering much new value.

  • To keep connecting my people, platform, and process for faster, smarter, better results.
  • Making the right contribution to the community. Use Agile and Lean processes to manage the work of your team.
  • Once you have tasted the positive result with Rally Software, you don't want to give up and come back to the old school of development pain any more.

When we started with Scrum at Rally years ago, we used to just do a design meeting every few weeks with a couple of key stakeholders to talk about what was coming up and prepare the backlog. This worked relatively well, but as we added more discipline to our release cycle, the ad-hoc backlog planning our product owners were used to, started to break.

The screens render relatively quickly but many actions that you would expect to require a single click require multiple clicks and pop-up windows. The extra windows and clicks make the product feel ponderous.

It more or less confirmed that we are using it the way they had in mind. We were hoping for a epiphany in terms of how we could use it better.

They also want to be a go to source for agile processes and have an online resource center. It’s not that great but had a couple of nuggets. It hasn’t really helped us too much and we are not too far off from the classical interpretation of agile.

I would recommend training, in particular for organizations that multiple on-going projects. The product seems optimized for larger, more complex teams and getting proper training on how to configure, administer and use the system would be beneficial

Implementation of RALLY services and program satisfaction among various group,... 1) Dev Outcomes: How were our resiliencies, development, learning & practitioners “make them do the work,” but that they ask you to do it “in a way like before.2) The Ops group: Just wish to make sure any change won't break current production envirementsAll the stake holders has to be on the same page

Alternatives Considered

JIRA basic version do not have basic support for test management, capacity planning & forecasting.

Rally is good & rich in features but if you want to implement safe , Agilecraft is definitely a better choice.
Rally supports safe but I did not get good support from technical desk & few features are really cumbersome to use.

HP Quality Center 11 supports agile teams well but I found it pretty costly.

Selected because the others seemed worse two years ago when the decision was made. VersionOne seemed ugly and too restricted. Might look better now. Microsoft TFS, now VSO, looked limited but also might look better now. Microsoft is improving it at a remarkably rapid pace. Jira was considered and rejected because their solution is too piecemeal requiring too much administration.

Return on Investment

  • Able to forecast & plan releases well using agilecraft leading to quality on time delivery.
  • Distributed teams are able to collaborate well, be it be daily scrum, retrospective, estimation though this. Also team members love the gamification part & they have fun using this tool. Earlier we use to face challenges due to distributed teams but after AgileCraft, collaboration & communication was no longer a challenge & we are able to see improvement not only in team velocity, but also team satisfaction.
  • Simplest tool to implement safe, scaling is always a problem with most of the agile tools but agilecraft helps in smoother implementation of safe practices & principles.

  • We has improved our accuracy in estimating release capacity and timelines and tracking team throughput.
  • Team collaboration has improved which is critical for us as teams were distributed at three locations. The Big Room Planning feature allows teams to identify the work to be done as well as dependencies and challenges. It helps team members to stay on the same page.
  • CA Agile Central has customized dashboards to view information in Scrum, Kanban or custom views. It helps senior management in closely tracking their releases & helps them in taking corrective action in case they feel milestones will not be met.
  • We are able to deliver every sprint into production since Continuous Integration environment has been setup with ease using github integration with CA Agile Central.
