Agility CMS

Agility is well suited for companies that want a balance of control and support. For major global site updates, these can be handled by Agility's support team, while minimal changes and updates can be performed autonomously by the company's own staff with ease. For companies that are interested in flexibility to reconstruct site structure or major global facelifts, Agility is less ideal because these changes must be handled and paid for through Agility support.

MindTouch

This has more to do with our company's implementation of MindTouch than the product itself. Our customers must sign into SalesForce to access our knowledge base. The knowledge base is on the first page that customers see, but it is buried way under a "feed." This is bad--users should be able to wander around in the knowledge base to see its structure, because that helps them learn the structure of the software, too. Our implementation also took the search bar in MindTouch away from external users, opting instead to go with a "federated" search bar that covers the knowledge base AND SalesForce topics. Don't do that either. Ugh.

Pros

Agility CMS

  • File management within the CMS is extremely helpful as a hosting/uploading tool local to our web pages and content.
  • Ability to clone web page content across mutli-language websites takes only a few clicks, and translation can be performed easily based on default English content.
  • Ability to post shared content and link content to categories for easy organization of content on the web - post once, and serve the content up on the live site in multiple places.

MindTouch

  • MindTouch has build a relevant platform to create and host public facing help content. It is easy to use yet robust enough to get highly technical with API's and seamless integrations.
  • MindTouch continues to revolutionize customer success. In the two years I have subscribed to their services, they continue to release new and useful features, educate and inspire the industry, drive innovation, and build strategic partnerships for long-term success.
  • MindTouch provides amazing customer and technical support. On top of a stellar product, they go out of there way to offer the best customer experience.
  • The Company Culture at MindTouch is impressive. Upon several visits to headquarters in downtown San Diego I have had the pleasure to become aquatinted with many of the employees. The company is comprised of stand-out talent and exceptional people working for the common goal of customer success
  • A dominate social media presence. If you want to know about MindTouch, you don't have to go very far. These guys are experts at what they sell and practice everything they preach.

Cons

Agility CMS

  • Simplification of uploading files would be ideal - where all files are located in the Media & Documents section rather than uploaded directly to Shared Content modules. One home for all files helps us keep track of what is uploaded and what is not.
  • Better copy/paste handling of content from external programs (cleaning Word document formatting, etc.), similar to handling by Word Press and other simplified CMS would be helpful.
  • Greater control over global content such as headers/footers, multi-language implementation, etc., would allow our developers more flexibility and reduce our time coordinating with Agility support and using BOH.

MindTouch

  • I would've said the WYSIWYG experience needed work, but that was recently addressed. There is, however, some visual cruft from the previous UI that could be ironed out.
  • Better API documentation and more support for contextual applications of the software. We had a pretty long road to implementation because updates on MindTouch's side that we weren't aware of broke our implementation. We addressed these shortcomings on our end since MindTouch couldn't commit to a solution that worked for us.
  • Some of the hierarchical choices that users can make don't feel like they're consistently applied throughout the experience.

We've put lots and lots of content into the MindTouch system, of course, so that makes it harder to opt out, but we're also very pleased with their rate of development and weekly pushing of improvements, as well as their response and solutions to our questions and input All in all, a winning combination.

It feels very responsive both in editor mode and when browsing and searching for content as an unauthenticated user of the site. Service windows are announced well ahead of time, so I have never experienced downtime to the extent that I have been unable to get work done.

Support

Agility CMS

Agility CMS 9.0

Support is always available and responsive when we email, responding right away that they are on the case, even if they are unable to solve the issue right away. Support will usually find the issue of our problem quickly and require minimal hand-holding, direction, or re-explanation from our team. They are knowledgeable about the platform and our instance and are able to run diagnostics with minimal information from us. When issues are resolved they always request confirmation that things are working as expected before closing out our tickets.

I think the support overall is good. They are quick to respond to requests and very interested in helping. We have, however, had issues come up that they have not been able to help us fix -- even at a tier 2 level. Thank goodness we had a developer on contract who was able to fix what we needed.

Written documentation and videos are very good and have helped on numerous occasions when I've had to look up how to accomplish a certain task. The reason I have not given a full score is mainly because there have been some inaccuracies in the documentation because updates to the MindTouch framework have slightly changed the way things work. But this is usually the same type of challenges I face when making documentation for the software solution we develop. So all in all I'm very satisfied with both the personal webinars and the online documentation MindTouch provides for their service.

Implementation was fairly quick. Migration of content from our old CMS could be started right away, while we had a design agency work on the visual aspects of the site. Although some tweaking and CSS troubleshooting was required underway, the system was functional and could be used by ourselves and our customer base from the first week of launch, albeit without the custom styling completely implemented. I'd say that's pretty good.

Alternatives Considered

Agility CMS

Agility offers a balance of simplicity and capability that other platforms don't offer. User-friendly platforms like Word Press do not offer our company the ability to fully customize our site based on our goals, but more adaptable programs like Drupal do not offer the support resources to simplify the structure of our site with pre-existing modules or professional development to meet our needs.

MindTouch

MindTouch offers a unique knowledge and information management tool that was different enough from traditional knowledge bases and advanced enough to not be a Wiki while allowing CRM integration and APIs for customization. MindTouch as a company is focused on making their product great where as other vendors treat this space as a bundle or checkbox feature without being robust enough to replace a knowledge base and PDF manuals.

MindTouch

  • Increased product adoption.
  • Greater ticket deflection rates.
  • Less Success team time spent on experimentation on how to perform basic functions that have since been documented.
