The terminals themselves don't seem to be well designed and have the appearance of being put together with off-the-shelf components. Hiding cables can be challenging. The design is slim and svelte enough, but it has the appearance of being more fragile (although it doesn't appear be particularly so). These terminals are best when left in a single location, at least in our implementation as switching revenue centers requires IT involvement.

I recommend PayPal Zettle quite a bit, actually. Its flexibility is easy enough to use for people who are not used to technology. Square has good traits, too, but since so many people already have PayPal accounts, it makes it much easier to use. It is perfect for everyday use of bot large and small transactions.

Pros
Agilysys
  • Screen layout/design for various outlets is pretty good and also flexible.
  • There are several modules that interact with the platform, making integration easier.
  • Stability in the environment is very good and we have very little downtime with the terminals.
  • Management of multiple outlets is excellent and there are a lot of options.
  • Add-on/value add features are robust.

  • The PayPal Here hardware connection is very effective, my mobile device recognizes it immediately and the PayPal Here application to receive payments also recognizes it immediately. I don't have to wait a long time like some other POS.
  • Transactions are made instantly, you just have to pass the NFC chip inside the PayPal Here system, and in a second the transaction will be carried out and it will be shown in the history of the PayPal account registered in the POS.
  • It is very easy to provide a receipt to the customer when they use their card within our PayPal Here POS system, as it allows us to digitally send a ticket to the customer and also allows us to send the invoice by email.

Cons
Agilysys
  • Integration with rGuest Seat is terrible, and it's a companion product. This definitely never lived up to its promise.
  • The boot process for the terminals is long and ridiculously unprofessional looking. There are some sloppy defaults for the boot process and the initial setup is needlessly complicated.
  • Shift management is confusing for staff, particularly when signing out at the end of a shift. Would like to see more work on this area.

  • While swiped payments are easy, manual entry of payment information often fails. This is a major roadblock when you are in the service industry because not everyone who is making payment is on site.
  • In almost every instance of accepting a payment, we have to call in and reverify every piece of information about our business before we are successful.
  • Whatever system they use to determine how high risk your business is can limit your usage if they get it wrong.
  • Customer service is inconsistent at best. Sometimes issues are handled quickly and easily, other time you have to jump through hoops.

There are no monthly costs, the only expense is the card processing fee which is lower than nearly everyone else out there.

I absolutely LOVE this system. It is very fast and easy to use, and integrates with my eCommerce platform perfectly. The card processing fees are really low and the money is in my account quickly, even on weekends! I can either keep the funds in my PayPal account and access them with my PayPal business debit, or I can transfer them to my back (or a combination of these). The funds are always in my bank next business day. Also, it was one of the least expensive solutions out there as far as the hardware goes.

Support Rating
Agilysys
Support is hit or miss with this platform. If you get a tech that knows the system, the experience is excellent. There have been more instances of escalated tickets going unanswered, which I deem unacceptable. Even if the answer is "I don't know" or "we can't do that" I expect an answer. Contrast this with VMware, who will file a bug report if they can't resolve the immediate issue and then will follow up with you. When it comes to IG support, I don't have confidence that they'll pursue a concern very far and they've been lax with follow-up

Support hasn't been needed in the 2 years of using PayPal but I have received calls from the company in the past asking about my experience with the device that was sent to me and they were pretty helpful with advice. Support is all over the internet if needed but for emergencies, so it is best to contact them during business hours.

InfoGenesis had a great implementation team and worked with us closely on the rollout to ensure minimal disruption. Micros terminals had better design overall and looked like they'd have lasted for 100 years, but Oracle was not fun to work with. IG's reporting options have made our Finance people happy as well. We were concerned with multiple integrations on the platform it replaced, but all of these turned out to be non-issues and we were able to work with IG staff to get what we wanted out of it. I'd prefer the hardware to be thought out more thoroughly, as it's weak in appearance by comparison despite being very usable.

The main selection criteria were ease of use and the presence of a plugin for WooCommerce. However, in practice it turned out that an important factor is also the availability of the product for purchase in a small batch and at an affordable price. I chose PayPal Zettle because I was able to easily and simply purchase it in my country.

Return on Investment
Agilysys
  • Our previous platform required more than occasional love and care and was hard to develop solutions for. InfoGenesis terminals don't have a lot of trouble in operation, which leads to more uptime and happy customers.
  • I previously mentioned rGuest Seat integration. We never got this to work as promised and got different answers from different resources when asked the same question.
  • Server sprawl began almost immediately. We went from a two server design to five in the end and still have occasional problems with kitchen printers.

PayPal
  • PayPal Here has allowed us to have a retail presence when we are away from our home location.
  • We have sold literally millions of dollars in merchandise at events over the last several years that we otherwise would not have been able to.
  • The only negative about PayPal Here is that we did not implement it sooner.
