Jabber

Jabber is excellent for enterprise usage providing IM, desktop sharing, collaboration and conversation history. It integrates well with WebEx Meeting and Outlook. There are free messaging and collaboration tools available so each organization much balance the cost and functionality of Jabber vs. other products

Pros

  • It's very easy to use. I was able to start from scratch and get a pretty complex workflow set up in just a couple hours.
  • The ability to create one "master table" with every piece of possible information is good for the "deep dive" members of the team, but then it's easy to create views and calendars based on just a few pieces of data that are better for one specific use or person.
  • Being able to store draft content on the system as attachments means that the review copy/image can be included in the workflow rather than as a separate email or in another tracking system.
  • The ability to quickly group, sort and filter on the master table make it easy for the power-users to work with the full set of information, but still find a specific project quickly.

  • Jabber is excellent for remote troubleshooting as it allows remote desktop sharing and even control. It is very easy to setup a sharing session- literally seconds- even for non technical users. This can be used by the business, or by IT personnel when troubleshooting an application issue. It can also save an organization money if they were using another, paid tool for remote troubleshooting.
  • Facilitates asynchronous communication using conversation style. When someone messages you a small window pops up and fades within a second or two. You can either click it to open or ignore it and open it later. This is an improvement over Jabber's predecessor, WebEx Connect, which would blink an icon at the bottom of the screen until you read the message. This was really annoying because, unless you could put up with the flashing icon, you needed to click on each message right away. That negated the concept of asynchronous communications.
  • Facilitates status tracking as Jabber has several statuses: green for Available, yellow for Away, red for "Do not Disturb". Finally grey is for offline. It also link with your Outlook and has automated statuses: "Presenting", i.e. sharing your desktop with another user via Jabber or WebEx or "In a meeting".

Cons

  • We are relatively new to Airtable and are still exploring its functionality. We've also just been using a free account which has some limits but paid plans have features that could be handy. So far, we're just thrilled at how it's streamlined our workflow and information management.

  • Federation (connecting Jabber to other businesses to see their availability, etc.) is spotty and only works under certain circumstances. There are different types of federation using different protocols for different types of systems and we usually find that no one else knows what type of system they have and it takes so much time to troubleshoot to setup. It's usually not worth it and we give up.
  • The presence indicators (availability icons) only work about 60% of the time. They read your Outlook calendar and also determine if you're on the phone to automatically change your availability icons. They are often wrong - for most of my users. You can change it yourself manually too.
  • Using the Jabber app on the iPhone requires the device VPN back to your system. If your UC system is in the cloud, maybe that's not a big deal to anyone. All of our equipment and systems are hosted in-house, so having our iPhones have an open VPN back to our network requires more overhead for security and management than we anticipated. We're constantly testing to confirm everything is locked down as much as possible to avoid security issues. iPhones are not the most secure devices and due to the amount of personal use on those devices, it provides a prime target for malware to gain access to a network. Not many of our users choose to use Jabber on their iPhones anyway, because they have had instances where the carrier connection isn't so good and it won't hold a VPN stable.

It's not perfect but it is really easy to use and I think most slightly technical people will pick it up quite quickly.

There are still some improvements to be made between MAC and Windows users. Also the share screen between various devices does not always work. Any user can quickly adapt and understand how to use Jabber. The interface is very intuitive and straight forward. The transition between interfaces on PCs, to tablets, to mobile devices is also very consistent and set up almost identically

Sometimes, I have to wait a bit longer but I'm on a low priced option so I understand why. Generally, they're able to provide me solutions to my problems as long as I'm not in a rush.

Even with the Jabber client, Cisco support is outstanding, with the knowledge and quick response you would expect from them. Their engineers understand their products and our issues are usually addressed quickly and by the same person we originally connect with instead of getting passed to additional people. Follow-up is good too. Their support is thorough.

Alternatives Considered

I have mostly set up and helped architect custom database solutions in a proprietary software, as compares directly to Airtable. I have set up and used JIRA Software extensively, and several Marketing Automation systems, and set up Oncontact CRM, and used DAM systems, and Basecamp project management. All in all setting up databases and introducing them to organizations is one of my primary skills and I have several years experience doing this within an organization and as a consultant for other organizations. This is why I love Airtable so much - I have never seen something so lightweight, so inexpensive, and so powerful. Pound for pound it whips any system I have ever used. When I think back to all the custom database solutions I've implemented, and other processes I've managed and consulted on within organizations, I can't help but wonder how many of them would have vastly better off with a simple Airtable implementation.

In 2008, we invested significantly in Cisco's phone system. Jabber is an extension of that system. In 2011, we compared Microsoft's Lync and Skype to Cisco's Jabber client. Both were inferior in call quality, video display, security, and user interface. Jabber stood out above the rest so far there were no comparisons. Since then, Skype for Business has gotten more secure and with Microsoft's purchase, I believe they have merged several technologies. If we were evaluating the products today, I think we would likely choose another product, simply due to the costs associated with the licensing vs. other solutions on the market.

Return on Investment

  • We are still in the early stages, but AirTable has allowed our small team of five to coordinate almost twice as many rentals of our gallery space for private events, thus providing out nonprofit with increased income that can be reinvested into improvements to our gallery and new programming.

  • The efficiency in which Jabber allowed us to communicate and collaborate with our remote workers easily. We were able to resolve issues quickly with our users by reaching them over Jabber First.
  • Jabber offers a “single pane of glass” for collaboration. It combines Voice, web conferencing, desktop sharing and video chat. Saves on software costs and management times.
  • We were able to contact our agents without disrupting their call flow and assist users to resolve issues quickly.
