Likelihood to Recommend

AirWatch

AirWatch is a great tool for large organizations that need to manage more than 100 devices. The product is capable of handling multiple platforms and is scalable to any size company.I would not recommend AirWatch to small companies, companies with minimal MDM needs or companies on a tight budget. It's the Rolls Royce of MDMs, it has all the bells and whistles and it's not inexpensive.

For client support Meraki has been invaluable. For internal support it has been even more invaluable however. I have to admit when we purchased Meraki it was with the intention of simply supporting our clients but we have ended up using it more for internal functionality than we have for client functionality, though it does fulfill a critical role in supporting our app. Because our app is iOS it could be problematic if we were asking all of our clients to update the app themselves, especially those who lock down the use of the iPad more than others. This way we support our app in a way that is almost invisible to the client.
For internal, remote support Meraki has been even more valuable. We often have sales people out of state and it has made supporting them a breeze!

Pros

  • Enrollment is a snap with many different options. This allows organizations with corporately owned or BYOD programs to bring devices under management in a flexible and scalable solution.
  • Deployment of apps-AirWatch makes deploying apps across your organization simple a quick.
  • AirWatch is usually close to "Zero Day" ready with major hardware manufacturers updated features. Many of the Android and iOS updated features are incorporated into the environments almost as soon as they are released.
  • AirWatch has great customer service. This was not always the case but as the company has grown over the last year in particular, I have been receiving better customer service compared to other MDMs.

  • App management is a very strong function. It makes app provisioning a snap without having to login with an Apple ID.
  • The remote login capability for computers really is a strong and capable function. Currently it is still in Beta but is such a strong and capable function I hope it is quickly made a standard function of the software.
  • The ability to geofence a device easily without having to jump through multiple hoops to do so has proved to be a fantastic function, very popular with our Enterprise level clients.

Cons

  • Adding mobile devices and users.
  • Need to have Apple VPP setup in order to push out apps to phones.
  • Lots of customizable configurations. (It's a good thing but it can be daunting at first).

  • Currently the application addition to Meraki has gone through some changes that make it not as user friendly as it used to be but has improved some areas of the function such as easy of deployment.
  • It would be nice to have the ability to reset a users password from the control panel. This function is currently missing.
  • Some of the navigation within the panel is not the best. It is a little obscure at times where you need to go for certain functions. For instance, to manage users, instead of a nav feature just saying, Manager Users, you have to know to click on a link simply called, "General". This could be improved.

Likelihood to Renew

AirWatch7.0
Based on 1 answer
We've used it for 3 years and our contract is up later this year. We own the licenses, but we would have to either renew cloud services or bring the services in-house and install on servers here. We may want to see what's new in the marketplace that could be just as useful and cost effective.

Usability

It works well for our environment and what we're using it for. It actually does more than we're currently utilizing, but I believe our needs will change in the near future and we could utilize more features.

Reliability and Availability

AirWatch5.0
Based on 1 answer
Just in the past few weeks our staff has had several issues with the website. It is either taking a long time to load anything or we are not able to get in at all. This is very frustrating when you are trying to manage and enroll users. It was down 2 days in a row just this past week. Not good!

Performance

Went over the availability just a minute ago on the last rating. Don't use the reporting too much but will likely begin that soon. Integration with Active Directory doesn't seem to bog either system down.

They're usually very good. I've talked to any number of techs from level one to level 3. They all seem pretty knowledgeable about the product and how to support it.

Have your organizational structure and heirarchy outlined. This helps when you are ready to create OU's and subs in AirWatch.

Alternatives Considered

AirWatch allows for more functionality and better management. The GUI is intuitive and easy to manage. Very simple to enroll a device once the user is created. AirWatch allowed us to create group administrators. This is a nice function that the others don't seem to have. We can create an administrator for different groups. This way they don't have full admin access over everybody, just the people that they supervise. The features are easy to access and it took very little time to enroll our company devices. All the competition seems to be missing one or two features whereas AirWatch has all of the ones that we need.

It is really scalable. They love to have more users as you pay by the license. They are great in this regard.

Return on Investment

  • Added a significant cost to the company.
  • Adds that ability to have control rather than give the employee control.
  • Takes away some of the risk that could happen if a device were stolen or a disgruntled employee became angry.
Scott Strader profile photo
  • Our immediate take away has been a savings of thousands a year in MDM fees. We were paying around $3.00 a device with our previous MDM and our average with Meraki is about $1.88 per device. That while providing far more functionality than our previous provider.
