Likelihood to Recommend

AirWatch

Airwatch is a leader in the EMS/MDM space and [I] believe it is poised to continue to be a leader. VMware's acquisition along with EMC/DELL will give even more resources to help Airwatch stay current in this ever changing space

I think its suitability is inversely proportional to the number of systems under management and the amount of time one has to manage them.

Pros

  • Report device status in one location
  • Show device compliance and remove device from MDM if device is compromised
  • Deploy, update, or install applications on a mass scale
  • Remove users ability to use device in situations of employee termination
  • Use app "catalog" to allow users to install specific company approved applications

  • MacOS Configuration - Used in combination with DEP, we can fairly easily automate the setup of computers for staff and students. The ability to install PKGs and run scripts has been a tremendous benefit. Also, the inclusion of other tasks, such as Directory Bindings has been a huge relief on technical staff's workload.
  • MDM - Configuration Profiles have also similarly eased our workload. We went from dropping PLISTs and building images with DeployStudio, to being able to much more easily and flexibly enforce system settings.
  • Inventory - I came into the department a few years after Jamf was implemented, but I cannot imagine how we would accomplish inventory management tasks without it. It provides us a one-stop shop to keep track of storage and production computers, as well as software management.

Cons

  • Specialized brand specific support and knowledge articles due to the major differences in configuration and issues related to different brands (Samsung, HTC, Apple, etc.).

  • Recon - remote enrollment doesn't seem to always work, can improve.
  • Jamf Admin - I think the layout is getting a little outdated, maybe room for improvement?

Likelihood to Renew

We've used it for 3 years and our contract is up later this year. We own the licenses, but we would have to either renew cloud services or bring the services in-house and install on servers here. We may want to see what's new in the marketplace that could be just as useful and cost effective.

Usability

It works well for our environment and what we're using it for. It actually does more than we're currently utilizing, but I believe our needs will change in the near future and we could utilize more features.

Reliability and Availability

Just in the past few weeks our staff has had several issues with the website. It is either taking a long time to load anything or we are not able to get in at all. This is very frustrating when you are trying to manage and enroll users. It was down 2 days in a row just this past week. Not good!

Performance

Went over the availability just a minute ago on the last rating. Don't use the reporting too much but will likely begin that soon. Integration with Active Directory doesn't seem to bog either system down.

They're usually very good. I've talked to any number of techs from level one to level 3. They all seem pretty knowledgeable about the product and how to support it.

Have your organizational structure and heirarchy outlined. This helps when you are ready to create OU's and subs in AirWatch.

Alternatives Considered

At the time (2013), AirWatch supported more platforms than their competition. Not only could you enroll mobile devices and tablets, but you could also install an agent and manage both Windows and Mac desktops and laptops. They had a very nice collaborative sharing program called Secure Content Locker that you could utilize with Office365, SharePoint or a simple shared network drive.

Jamf Pro is like Apple Remote Desktop on steroids. Jamf Pro has additional features to manage devices that allow me to have greater control and allowing me to provide the end user with faster and more efficient support. Our district selected Jamf Pro because the features it offers far surpasses Apple Remote Desktop by giving us the ability to track inventory and allowing us to do more than we ever dreamed about while using just Apple Remote Desktop.

It is really scalable. They love to have more users as you pay by the license. They are great in this regard.

Return on Investment

  • This product is far more flexible than Exchange native ActiveSync.
Kelli Thompson profile photo
  • Positive. It has allowed me to support an entire organization with minimal IT staff.
  • Transparency, my leadership finally has exposure into the health of their hardware and knows what they actually own.
