AirWatch

AirWatch is a great tool for large organizations that need to manage more than 100 devices. The product is capable of handling multiple platforms and is scalable to any size company.I would not recommend AirWatch to small companies, companies with minimal MDM needs or companies on a tight budget. It's the Rolls Royce of MDMs, it has all the bells and whistles and it's not inexpensive.

MobileIron

We have very few complaints when it comes to MI. So far it has offered a great user experience and has been dependable. It handles our mail flow and synchronization well within iOS. If a company is looking for a solution that works with regular updates to their product and regular updates, then MobileIron is a great place to start

Pros

  • Enterprise application management - basically we can deploy the application under app catalog and end users can access these applications through their mobile devices after enrollment.
  • Content locker feature is one of the best features which I came across and it is widely used by any organization in order to manage all organization level content in it. It has many more features which we can explore and manage policies accordingly.
  • Admin Console, reporting services, accessing the public app through enterprise store, compliance policies, remote device wipe, passcode management these are major features which we can focus on and explore accordingly
  • Separate Inbox, contacts and calendar application for different OS. Boxer is their new application launch for emails on the device.

  • Easy management of Apple/Android devices
  • Offer a BYOD portal so that the end user can bring in their own device and not compromise your network
  • Security management of devices to ensure they comply with security guidelines.

Cons

  • The MDM space is moving fast and growth is challenging for growing technology companies. Airwatch is no different in some of their support challenges. However investing in a TAM has proven to be well worth the investment. Having a point person to facilitate through support has been critical to our successful implementation of Airwatch in our environment.

  • MobileIron in my view needs to manage their releases and updates better. There seems to be a disconnect on release dates, they appear random.
  • We would like to see more Windows support.
  • We would like MobileIron to include some services offered in Platinum licenses, offered in the lower end Gold.

Likelihood to Renew

AirWatch7.0

We've used it for 3 years and our contract is up later this year. We own the licenses, but we would have to either renew cloud services or bring the services in-house and install on servers here. We may want to see what's new in the marketplace that could be just as useful and cost effective.

Usability

It works well for our environment and what we're using it for. It actually does more than we're currently utilizing, but I believe our needs will change in the near future and we could utilize more features.

Reliability and Availability

AirWatch5.0

Just in the past few weeks our staff has had several issues with the website. It is either taking a long time to load anything or we are not able to get in at all. This is very frustrating when you are trying to manage and enroll users. It was down 2 days in a row just this past week. Not good!

Went over the availability just a minute ago on the last rating. Don't use the reporting too much but will likely begin that soon. Integration with Active Directory doesn't seem to bog either system down.

It is online based, after learning content you can take a test and if you don't pass you get two other chances to pass. Once you pass the test you can print out your certification or save it

Have your organizational structure and heirarchy outlined. This helps when you are ready to create OU's and subs in AirWatch.

Alternatives Considered

AirWatch is the top dog when it comes to Mobile Device Management is my opinion. The granularity of the controls in the console, the vast amount of features available to control Android devices, and their custom application wrapping features are top notch. I think all of the other MDM providers are playing catch-up, and some are moving quickly. For me, the security controls AirWatch has in-place for the web console is one of the biggest advantages they have over their competitors

MobileIron at the time offered an email gateway. This was a big deciding factor at the time. We did not want to purchase a Microsoft Forefront server to act as a proxy.

It is really scalable. They love to have more users as you pay by the license. They are great in this regard.

Return on Investment

  • Negative only. Server infrastructure is 300% larger than our other MDM onsite.
  • Airwatch required a team of 12 to support, versus our other MDM of 3 employees.

  • MobileIron has helped us reduce cost by eliminating the need for a 40LB flight bag by using iPads. We have reduced fuel cost due to the weight decrease.
