Akamai

Akamai is (as far as I'm aware) class leading in it's offering, although I haven't used anything else - but it is a really excellent CDN where you don't need to update your file references or anything like that, since you pass through Akamai's edge servers IT development teams don't need to change the way in which they would work in order to get the benefits. In terms of less well-suited scenarios - it's hard to say since you couldn't really use it for purposes other than what it's designed for, although the rules do allow for some pretty impacting changes to be possible, you could potentially take the site down if you were working uninformed.

It's great for engineers who know what they're doing, but you don't want to bug an engineer every time you want to update an image asset. The process of uploads and invalidations can be too complex for non-technical staff, which can bottleneck content delivery and updates.

Pros

  • Caching is one of the greatest benefits that Akamai allows for, saving time, money and experiencing the user experience.
  • Knowing they provide DDOS and other attack protection gives you peace of mind.
  • How finely you can tune all of the different settings available to you, from blocking IPs, cache settings, headers, redirects and even handling error statuses .

  • Easy integration into our platform
  • Easy scalability to add more servers

Cons

  • Cost. Akamai is an enterprise level product and the cost can be pretty expensive for smaller organizations.
  • Activations can take a while and therefore if you are doing a lot of testing on different scenarios you may spend hours waiting for activations to take effect. However this may not be an issue with Akamai itself but the fact that rules need to be propagated to all edge servers.

  • If price is the main concern, CloudFront is not the cheapest-in-class by a wide margin
  • Some of the settings are not obvious to new users, and the management dashboards could use work
  • Lacks fine-grained access controls and statistical reports for usage

Alternatives Considered

I haven't had much experience with other CDNs and to be honest I haven't heard of many more other than Akamai which just goes to show which one is the most trusted and proves to be the best. There are others out there, such as CloudFlare, that claim to provide a similar service but there is always something missing that Akamai just already has.

CloudFront is well-suited for a particular use case with its native tie-ins to other Amazon/AWS services, like S3. If choosing from a platform-specific CDN, we tend to go with whichever CDN is available for use on that platform (e.g. Google or Azure). In rare cases we might suggest a lower-cost CDN for use cases where the cost of bandwidth is of top importance, but these cases tend to be unusual.

Return on Investment

  • Speed up delivery of content and improved user experience for users coming to our website
  • Save cost as we do not need as many back end servers to run our web instance because majority of load is being handled by Akamai servers

  • Reduces the load of main application servers, meaning fewer active resources in use on EC2, ElasticBeanstalk, etc, saving money
  • Greatly speeds up page loads for users, when configured correctly (like any CDN)
