Extended Endpoint Protection, part of Alert Logic Essentials

This is pretty good AV product - lightweight, easy to install, and easy on system resources. It will take some getting used to on the end user side, it doesn't scan in a traditional way, and it does not have a taskbar icon so it hard to know if it's working or installed. My only complaint would be the false positives which I know every AV system has, but the problem with Barkly is that it alerts the users with a message (which they freak out about) and it alerts IT with an email. Again, not a major issue, but it can be annoying until it is overridden. The override process is super easy though, so its again, not a big deal.

Forcepoint DLP

In scenarios where you are just trying to block specific types of data based on a rule, it can be used very effectively. If you are trying to use fingerprinting to classify data, Forcepoint is not well suited for this. You would need a separate technology in order to classify data appropriately.

Pros

Extended Endpoint Protection, part of Alert Logic Essentials

  • Stops programs from making changes to users' system - this can be hit or miss, but I'd rather have a false positive and have to override it, then a virus on my systems.
  • The override system for false positives is very simple and easy to use - if a program throws up a flag, it is very easy to tell Barkly to leave it alone and it will do this network-wide, which is nice for things like updates.
  • Very lightweight, small install and leaves almost no footprint on your system. Also system resource utilization is very light.

Forcepoint DLP

  • It is a very complete solution that addresses a wide range of different security issues and it does it well.
  • Forcepoint's Technical Support is on the ball. They have improved greatly over the last 3 years.
  • The level of professionalism from Forcepoint really completes the picture.

Cons

Extended Endpoint Protection, part of Alert Logic Essentials

  • There is no visible icon that it is installed unless you go into Add/Remove programs, locally you would not know its there.
  • If an update is installed (i.e. Windows Update) and Barkly flags it, you will get SPAMMed with alerts until it is overridden. An easy fix but can be annoying if you are on your way in and not at the office yet.
  • Reporting is a bit lit in the Admin console - installs, and updates, but not much else.
  • Getting better, but when they update their product, there wasn't much warning originally. A bit unsettling when you log into your console and see every one of your end users out-of-date.

Forcepoint DLP

  • Remote filtering is not as advanced as we would like.
  • Support time is not as quick as needed in most cases.
  • Upgrades of appliances and software is not as easy as other solutions.
  • HTTPS inspection needs to hand a valid cert and doesnt work correctly with all vendors.

We have been fairly happy with the product and how it has worked. We have looked at other vendors for url filter and such and have not found one that meets our needs or does what we have been doing with Websense. The product has been fairly stable and we have only had a few issues in the past. We have all seen that it was one of the highest leaders from the Gartner Group Magic Quadrant for Web Gateways.

Because we've brought our problem of inexplicable web traffic disruption and they effectively ceased working with our troubleshooting team even though we'd eliminated other avenues as the potential source of the problem. Once they stopped helping us look for a problem, their product became less appealing as the long-term solution. They may claim to want to be "my" (or "your") partner, but partners need to stick it out beyond the "traffic looks good from my perspective" attitude. They need to help us figure out what we're doing differently that could negatively impact business.

Alternatives Considered

I've found Barkly to be much better than these products at protecting my systems. It does not require the horsepower that these do to run. It uses systems resources well. It protects well. It alerts and updates well. This is a good AV system to have on your endpoints and is a sound financial investment if you are looking to protect your assets from virus/malware/ransomware.

We have tried out Office 365 and Trend Micro DLP but those solutions have not worked out as we hoped. That said, when we looked at Forcepoint Data Loss Prevention, there were only minor issues we came across that did not have any negative impact and overall, the solution was what we needed.

Return on Investment

Extended Endpoint Protection, part of Alert Logic Essentials

  • Decently priced for AVs
  • Has protected against several viruses, and that right there is enough to warrant purchase, any virus stopped is money saved
  • Low impact on users, so they aren't complaining of slowness on their computers when scanning (it does not scan traditionally)

Forcepoint DLP

  • The exchange of financial documents with customers creates extreme risk as data loss could result in financial and reputation damage to the customer. The cost of deploying Forcepoint is fractions of pennies compared to the potential financial impact of data loss.
  • There is some administrative overhead associated as false positives are inevitable, requiring a manual review and a potential loss of productivity.
