I've only used Fortigates in small and medium environments with multiple locations and the Fortigates work very well. They are usually very low maintenance and easy to upgrade. Creating site-to-site VPNs, as well as SSLVPNs, are very simple on Fortigates. The low-end Fortigates have pretty much the same functionality as the high end and can be managed the same way.

Ease of configuration, rich feature set and robust monitoring have made this product almost fun to use. I still consult the manual, but the intuitive design of the GUI makes most configuration tasks self explanatory. We deploy several different models, but the management is nearly identical across all of them, making it easy to keep on top of hundreds of devices

The cost was comparable to the SonicWall we were looking at but feature wise, they are in a different league. The Fortigate offered far more next generation firewall features and they were bundled in with the license we chose. The interface is much easier to use and we spend less time bouncing between different screens when configuring rules. The Cisco offered a similar feature set but was significantly higher in price. We use Cisco for all our other network equipment so it made sense to stick with them for our firewall but we couldn't justify the difference in price.

My environments are pretty small (less than 100 users per location) so no issues here.

Return on Investment

  • Filled a critical business need to protect home grown websites.
  • Integrated well with SIEM.

  • Renewals are quite decent but if you scale them over 2 - 3 years, I strongly recommend updating the unit after that time, will give the more juice from the FortiOS releases.
  • The initial investment from the FortiGate UTM Solutions will always come with a better bundle license and features, also it's an advantage for those who seek to lower the cost of initial investment to enable specific features.
  • ROI will be seen after the 6th month.
