Alexa

Alexa is perfect for PR agencies tracking analytics for their client reporting -- especially if media relations is a core competency for them. We use Alexa almost exclusively for our media relations efforts and showing the reach of our media coverage, the potential of a media opportunity, and more to our clients.

Google Analytics

For optimizations of anonymous tracking, google analytics is second to none--and it's free! Unless you have extremely high traffic... then it get's very expensive very fast. It is well suited for tracking multiple sales channels, across multiple devices, and allows for very granular tracking. GA supports annotations, providing invaluable context when viewing trends.

Pros

  • It sources website analytics for most websites we're interested in tracking.
  • Each website's dashboard is easy to understand and pull numbers from.
  • We can get very nitty gritty with the numbers we're pulling or keep it simple by just pulling basic website visitor stats.

  • Google Analytics is extremely simple to implement, no matter what web environment you are developing in.
  • Out of the box, Google Analytics provides a great deal of information that is organized in a logical manner. The information is presented in an easy-to-read format. Each report is easily "exportable."
  • Implementing custom attributes and conversion goals is relatively simple. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to setup your channels, etc.

Cons

  • Not all websites are included, and there isn't always a rhyme or reason for who is or isn't in Alexa.
  • It would be great to have more subset URLs tracked vs. only the main website URL. This could really help companies track more direct correlation between numbers and work being done.

  • GA still misses a few of the features some of the commercial tools do in regards to in depth data mining and trending.
  • It would be nice to see more Social sentiment in the GA system. This is an up and coming area that many are now adding to their tools, but most of the algorithms are so-so. Given the data Google captures they could build a good picture for social sentiment, but today are doing very little other than some social connectivity.

The new features from the Universal Analytics update in late 2013 make the tool that much more useful. There are still unexplored features to consider and all of it amounts to more power and ability to gain insight into your site, what the traffic there is doing, where is came from and where it is leaving to. All stuff eMarketing and web managers will want.

Google Analytics provides a wealth of data, down to minute levels. That is it's greatest detriment: find the right information when you need it can be a cumbersome task. You are able to create shortcuts, however, so it can mitigate some of this problem. Google is continually refining Analytics, so I do not doubt there will be improvements

Alternatives Considered

Alexa is the first type in its product category that I have used.

Platform-specific analytic tools are useful for sure, but overall still fall short of what Google Analytics provides long-term. The associated trends you can monitor with Google Analytics has much more dynamic potential in reporting, presentations, and developing strategies.

Return on Investment

  • I am ready to write a full blown Alexa skill application to make money
  • I got exposed to the Web development environment of Amazon web service by learning Alexa

  • POSITIVE: The overall understanding of how the site performs, end-users interact, and content gets digested is vital for any digital strategy and Google Analytics is a very reliable tool that can have as simple or complex of a utility as the user makes it.
