Likelihood to Recommend

Alexa

Alexa is perfect for PR agencies tracking analytics for their client reporting -- especially if media relations is a core competency for them. We use Alexa almost exclusively for our media relations efforts and showing the reach of our media coverage, the potential of a media opportunity, and more to our clients.

SEMRush

SEMRush is probably most useful for performing audits, especially during the sales process. Although we still use it for our ongoing clients, it seems less suited for retainer clients within an agency (where there are many clients). It seems to work much more "one-off" versus being able to wrap up a bunch of information for a client and save it.

Pros

  • It is easy to navigate through Amazon Developer
  • Even for a non coder, it is very thorough and easy to go through setting up steps
  • Testing for Alexa is also awesome since you can use simulated websites for it instead of buying the actual device

  • Interface - The user interface is clean, while still maintaining a great deal of information in an easy-to-digest manner. The navigation is intuitive and using the "Projects" function allows to keep information separate as needed.
  • Ability to Customize - We can fully customize dashboards within the platform, and use them to track difference KPIs.
  • Content Analyzer - The new Content Analyzer tool has been hugely helpful for our copywriting team to ensure all digital content is optimized. It bridges the gap between our teams and takes a lot of work off our SEO team's plate.

Cons

  • Although it is easy to build an Alexa skill, in the end there is still some Java script coding involved. More instruction on that could help users finish building a skill. I had to spend a day looking up what things are for the final step. It was a bit time consuming

  • Cost of Membership - SEMRush is not an inexpensive tool. Relative to other marketing intelligence tools, considering the functionality, SEMRush is an investment.
  • Platform Updates - SEMRush constantly seems to be updating the platform, causing confusion because certain features are removed or moved to another location within the interface. It makes it difficult to navigate the platform on occasion.

SEMRush has a slight learning curve, but everything is organized really well. Once you learn where everything is, using the software and running reports is incredibly easy. You can easily add new projects, get help for improving on-page SEO, and there are even video tutorials that walk you through the whole system if you still feel uncomfortable with it.

Alternatives Considered

We used to use Compete until it changed what it does entirely. Alexa was the best option after we did research. It is more granular in the numbers it provides too, which is good for what we do.

Moz is the main tool I used before SEMRush. I found Moz to be very helpful and robust in a lot of ways, but extremely lacking in terms of the competitor analysis. SEMRush has a much stronger system for analyzing competitors, which is of high value to my clients. It also has a backlink audit tool that Moz did not have.

Return on Investment

  • It helps us show the ROI and reach of our work. Since implementing Alexa into our tracking and reporting, along with other tools, we've seen greater retention with our clients b/c we are able to better show the reach and results of our labor.

  • Our SEO traffic is up more than 30% YOY.
  • We cut costs of SEO tools by 75% moving from other enterprise products and have been able to create an internal process to enhance reporting, project management and execution.
  • This had generated nearly 8 figures in additional revenue this year alone.
