Dropbox

Dropbox is well suited for file sharing and file syncing. I highly recommend it to anyone that works from multiple locations or uses multiple peripherals. It may be less appropriate for large-scale collaboration unless you invest in an appropriate package. It may also be less appropriate depending on how secure the files need to be. I have never had any issues with security for my purposes but sensitive documents like medical records may not be suitable without research into the security offered by Dropbox.

Pros

  • Collaboration - it is an excellent tool for collaboration and makes it very easy for several people to work on projects together.
  • Scripting - If there is something that Alfresco does not do natively, you can use their custom API to do almost anything that you want.
  • Interface - The interface of the application is nice and neat, and is very easy to use and understand.

  • File synchronization is fast compared to other services in the cloud.
  • It is a well-known and easy-to-use application.
  • The paid versions of the application are not expensive, in correlation with the storage capacity that it provides.
  • The search engine within the application is excellent, you will not have problems finding a file quickly.
  • Does not distort the large image files. If you send a large image in photoshop, the person you share it with will get the same version.

Cons

  • Some more APIs can be added although the existing APIs very well provide the required features.
  • Their other tools such as collaboration, etc need to be marketed well so that companies adopt Alfresco as a whole package.
  • Alfresco needs to be on the lookout for immediately introducing any new functions provided by other competitive products.

  • It is not possible to edit documents saved in the cloud.
  • The space offered by the free version is little.

The Alfresco market is bigger and bigger and it's logic. It's really a product that provides innovation quite often. Alfresco implements the standard CMIS 1.1 (before that the standard has been published), they provides interesting tools like IPhone apps or Android apps. The latest 4.2 version provides as well a new re-branded user interface.

Dropbox is at the top of its game. There are other competitors, but Dropbox has served me well and has always been a reliable, seamless product that I trust and would highly recommend

Process was relatively smooth and overall, downtime minimal. MSI was very responsive to our needs and made the transition easier than it otherwise might have been.

I needed to stay current in improving my daily operations. Dropbox
was suggested to me by a former colleague two-years ago and I've been using it just fine ever since.

Alternatives Considered

Ultimately a cost decision - Alfresco community is free and has a decent community and various forums, books, etc available. The enterprise version is far less expensive than other options (although costs can add up depending on the the hardware it's running on). It is built upon alot of other mainstream products such as lucene/solr, spring, java and fits into our environment nicely.

We chose Dropbox because its interface is simple to use and the synchronization of documents is fast. It is a really excellent application.
