Algolia

Algolia is great anytime you need client search. I would never use it to do any automated tasks or anything like that, though. It's great for human use, and I don't know if anyone would ever want to use it for anything other than client-search, but Algolia knows its domain very well and solves client search more easily than any alternative I've seen.

Swiftype

Swiftype is excellent for e-commerce companies and especially the financial services sector where speed plays a major role in executing transactions. It is also very dynamic and customizable. It is very useful for electronics/travel reservations on e-commerce sites also. The only place it is inappropriate is when it comes to indexing a website in which case Google is slightly better, as I mentioned before. There is nothing much to complain about here in regards to the breadth of applications and analytics it offers.

Pros

  • Algolia is brain-dead simple to set up. I've implemented search with Algolia in a dozen different ways now, and it never took me longer than a few minutes to get the functionality I want. With Algolia, the only challenge is designing your search UI -- if you don't want to use their baked in UI solutions.
  • Results come back incredibly fast. I'm not sure how Algolia does it, but every keystroke I make in a search field returns new results instantly. It's hard to believe that I'm searching large datasets on a remote server when it works so fast.
  • Very little customization is needed for 99% of use-cases. Algolia's out of the box setup works great, and it takes no prior knowledge to set up.

  • Swiftype helps with providing search results at a very rapid pace. Since our industry is in financial services, this plays a major role.
  • Swiftype also has a very good integration setup with the websites as well as mobile applications.
  • The API's we use are configurable and customizable. Hence, we can use it differently for mobile and web apps.
  • Swiftype also provides analytics of geographical information of search results. This is very critical from troubleshooting prospective in-case of issues.

Cons

  • Recent pricing model changes made Algolia considerably more expensive. I understand that companies change their models all the time, but my plan almost doubled in price overnight. They let me keep my legacy plan for as long as I wanted, but I had already outgrown it, so a small increase in demand caused big price spikes. It's still cheap for what it is though.
  • The documentation is generally good, but sometimes hard to navigate. I was trying to find examples of how to combine geo-queries with normal ones, and I couldn't find an example, but it wasn't actually hard to figure out.
  • Some of the advanced features can be hard to understand at first. This isn't really a con, as it just means Algolia is loaded with features, but I was a bit overwhelmed the first time I tried to customize an index.

  • Swiftype does not have indexes ready to go. When you add a new website to the search set, it takes some time to index the website. This is something that is different from what Google does. Google in this particular aspect does a relatively better job.
  • Swiftype is very expensive, this makes it difficult for smaller companies to afford.

Alternatives Considered

Algolia was by far and away the easiest of the three to implement. PostgreSQL has many search modules that can be used on top of your usual database, however, none are particularly efficient and can quickly become overwhelmed at scale. Equally, they do not handle business metric weightings well. Elastic search is what Algolia is built on and works well, however, it would require a lot more manual setup to ultimately get to a solution that is similar and likely worse than Algolia offer. Both Algolia and elastic search suffer from the problem of having to keep two items databases in sync.

We selected Swiftype compared to Google as it is very well designed and has a great layout. The technical support helps anytime we need them. They also provide great support. The analytics provided are also great and provide excellent features. It is easy to use and configure. It has excellent integration with sites and mobile applications. We have done a feasibility analysis with other products such as Algolia, Elasticsearch, Apache Solr.

Return on Investment

  • Algolia has allowed us to make content on our app more discoverable than before. We used to have more naive search implementations, but since implementing Algolia, we've seen several metrics go up
  • Average user session length has gone up ~25%
  • Average items viewed per customer has increased
  • Overall number of transactions has also gone up

  • It has a positive impact as it helps traders and other users to seamlessly use applications.
  • It has a positive ROI and we would know the results in time to come.
