AlienVault OSSIM

Small, medium or large, every company can benefit from this tool. Even if you decide to supplement your existing SIEM this is the way to go and chances are you might end up switching to this as your primary.

SysAid

Any small to medium business wanting a quick, inexpensive and easy to use service ticket solution is a prime target for SysAid. Not working in an enterprise it is hard for me to evaluate SysAid's use there. It might be lacking some of the more advanced features used in an enterprise scenario. If I were evaluating SysAid for use in an enterprise, I would think it would still deserve to be on the short list, since sometimes IT people think they need more than they really do

Pros

  • Being a part of the Open Source community, open source tools are always a big plus for me.
  • Being a simple straightforward tool, it does a great job especially with the asset management piece built into it.
  • Straightforward
  • Open Threat Exchange(OTX) gives a straightforward live threat intel feed to work off.

  • SysAid's customization has been very useful for us. The ability to add/modify fields and forms has permitted us to tweak it to do exactly what we want.
  • Email integration has been an outstanding way for us to streamline ticket generation and routing. This means getting the ticket to the right team without manual assignment.
  • Password Services gives our users the ability to unlock and reset AD passwords without IT assistance.

Cons

  • It's a free product! Yes, it doesn't have all the capabilities of the USM anywhere, but it does a great job. Can't really complain.

  • The version of SysAid we used was the free version so it had limitations on the amount of users we could have using the product. I'm sure there were other features that we didn't have, but it worked for what we needed it for.
  • You have to install the client on each machine that you want to remote into. This was the requirement when I used the product, but that could have since been changed or there may be a better solution with the premium versions.

Usability

AlienVault OSSIM8.0
Based on 1 answer
AlienVault OSSIM is far easy to use and manage - provided you know what you're doing. As any SIEM application, there is some background knowledge required in order to take advantage of the product's functionalities, such as the log correlation and analysis. Other than that, the application is quite usable and robust.

It definitely requires a lot of getting used to. The layout and UI is very technical. I could imagine IT people would get a grasp of it quickly, but regular end users not so much.

Alternatives Considered

AlienVault OSSIM has the upper ante in initial deployment price, being that it's open source. Also, with perhaps the exception of SolarWinds, it has a lower optimal requirements for onsite deployment, hence your OPEX won't be hit very hard by investing in new hardware to suit the appliance. The correlation engine is somewhat more robust that their counterparts in LogRhythm and SolarWinds, and the IDS (both NIDS and HIDS) are more reliable as well in terms of results. Finally, although Tenable SecurityCenter is more robust in dashboards, alerts and reports, it comes short in front of OSSIM in terms of real-time IDS and SIEM correlation.

Return on Investment

  • The only investment here is setting it up and I think seeing it's performance it's a fantastic tool and has a great positive ROI!

  • IT Department satisfaction. Before we had a formal service ticketing solution, users needs were often difficult to communicate and responses often were lacking. SysAid has completely turned this around for use and enhanced user satisfaction.
  • Recognition of effort by upper management. Before SysAid, reviews by management often understated the amount of work done by the IT staff. SysAid easily gives us reports of what and how many tickets each It staff member is working on and completing, leading to increased recognition for that effort.
  • Set better expectations. SysAid allows us to see where each IT person is engaged, so when new projects appear, we are better able to present a reasonable time frame for the start and end of the work. Users apperciate this.
