AlienVault USM
I think AlienVault USM is well suited for a medium size company where there are remote sites. The star configuration deployment would work very well. I would need to see how AlienVault would perform on a large multi-national company if headquarters wanted to correlate all data.

Autotask
Autotask is much more well suited to a busy company. It's a little bit price-prohibitive if you only have a couple of employees or not many clients. This solution works for us, having 10 employees and about 200 clients. Any less than that, the pricing wouldn't be worthwhile.Autotask fits very well with us. It's easy to keep on task. Any tickets that are getting old will shoot out alerts and scheduled tasks for our techs to finish up work on it. It's also very easy to run reports for clients on the services that they've used through us. We love Autotask.

Pros
- Compliance: For each compliance aspect in each standard, there's an AlienVault USM feature which helps compliance. For instance, in PCI DSS Compliance you require File Integrity Monitoring, and AlienVault USM has it. Every component of the standard gets covered by the product.
- Data handling: Event management can become cumbersome if not well handled. AlienVault USM classifies event information properly where it belongs to the data it's useful to you. When you export a report, you can filter out easily what you don't need, so you only extract valuable information.
- Asset availability: It is really handy to cover every aspect of your asset classification, events to come in, services each asset has, location, all of the information really helps to draw alarms properly.

- Shows all the communication within the tickets very clearly, even if it holds a huge amount of information.
- Manages projects effectively by dividing the project into phases, each phase into multiple milestones, and each milestone in multiple tasks. And for each task, you can assign all its related attributes like the resources, estimated hours, duration, start date, end date, and so on.
- It has very professional customizable dashboards that show the progress, status, and even trends of everything.
- It supports notifying internal and external stakeholders for each note added on a project or ticket.

Cons
- Vulnerability Scanner reporting: The reporting from the integrated scanner (OpenVAS) are really difficult to read. They could have done a better job by scraping the report or creating a custom report from the data of the scan. However, leaving the default report template from OpenVAS makes the report somewhat useless.
- Sometimes the local integration fails because of the scope of the tool. Let me elaborate on that: The OpenVAS scanner has certificated that expire within a year, and that makes the USM fail scans if you don't renew certificates yourself. They should have made them last at least 10 years. Same with Nagios, sometimes the integration fails and one doesn't know why unless you jailbreak it and find out in the logs for sure.
- They do not provide a standalone installation of the product, because they modified so much the Linux distribution, that it must always be deployed as a virtual machine or appliance, but not on your own server.

- Supports Gantt charts for project management.
- Filter tickets for notes for a specific user.
- Creating reports needs enough training to be able to create a professional one.

After using it for some time I have found the interface to be somewhat "clunky." Some of the system management requirements have to be done from the CLI (Command Line Interface). There is no way to easily automate some of the system maintenance, that if not addressed, causes the system to become unusable after a period of time

I have not had a single issue with the alienvault support staff. Any issue or question that we had, especially in the beginning during the installation phase the support staff was readily available via phone and email to help us. I am very happy with the decision we made to go with alienvault.

Alternatives Considered
I hate to say it, but one of the main reasons we selected the AlienVault was the price. Some of the cheaper options seemed too difficult to manage and the more expensive options were both expensive and difficult to manage. We don't have a Security Admin so simplicity was a big factor.

Autotask is more robust than simple ticketing systems. It provides better billing ability that many ticketing systems and works well with existing clients. The invoicing options provided are beneficial to the business and streamline the process. The ticketing system provides documentation needed to service clients today and tomorrow. Autotask is on the right path.

- We can effectively contract profitability. After running a few quick reports we realized we were charging about 1/2 what we should have been for fixed rate projects.
- We track resource utilization to see where our technicians are productive and what is eating their valuable time.
- I feel that Autotask is the single biggest impact on overall business ROI. We track profitability of everything from hardware to services to contracts with it. It allows us to make intelligent business decisions based on numbers.
