AlienVault USM

The main reason I would recommend AlienVault is because of its niche market. This product is perfect for the small to mid size company. Having the USM really simplifies all your tools into one interface. You really don't need a Security Admin to manage this tool. I am just assuming that it would not work well for large companies that have entire security teams that manage different areas of security.

Juniper SRX

  • Well suited for any application where a firewall or routing is needed.
  • Compared to other offerings, it is really the best.
  • The only area where there may be a need for something different is for high-end DDoS protection.

Pros

  • Centralizing and aggregating logs from sources of all types
  • Searching through real-time and long-term events
  • Flexibility and customization (Linux OS with open source tools, open for whatever hacking you desire)
Jon Armani profile photo
  • Ease and stability of configuration. Automatic rollback makes changes foolproof.
  • Strong range of hardware options in all tiers.
  • Common OS and configuration across all models and even other Juniper products.

Cons

  • Performance is not great at more than 300 EPS; bottleneck appears to be the MySQL disk I/O
  • Dashboards are decent to customize, but are lacking
  • UI and services aren't always stable or predictable; when adding a new plugin it sometimes takes things like a reconfig command at CLI in order for the change to stick
Jon Armani profile photo
  • Some of the more complex setups (clustered HA, etc.) can be a little difficult to configure.
  • The lowest-end model that supports true multi-site HA is relatively expensive. It would be nice to have that option in lower models.
  • Some configuration options (particularly the way address book entries are done) can get tedious and make for very long configs.

Almost all functions are intuitive, custom logging is not very easy to configure.

Support

Based on previous experience we had to explain and demonstrate the problems several times; fixes takes long time to be implemented and rolled out to end users. Several times we had to guide the support contact to fully understand the problem

It is pretty good. There are sometimes minor issues.

It required us to make a lot of changes and use a decent amount of manpower in order to implement the software.

Alternatives Considered

Did not look at many, but cost was a big driver for me, along with ease of setup and use

Juniper SRX is significantly better in every category.Cisco ASA was terrible. The config is unintuitive and not easy to manage. Cisco left the ASA abandoned from any kind of meaningful software updates for around a decade.

  • It is difficult to measure ROI, as the SRX is a basic requirement for us.
