AlienVault USM

AlienVault USM is well suited for smaller organizations or organizations of any size that are just lifting their security operations or security monitoring program off the ground.AlienVault USM is less appropriate for more mature organizations who have the staff to support more advanced security operational capabilities or engage in advanced threat hunting. Also, organizations who like more ability to add internally developed functionality into their SIEM through scripting or other automated response activities.

Juniper SRX

  • Well suited for any application where a firewall or routing is needed.
  • Compared to other offerings, it is really the best.
  • The only area where there may be a need for something different is for high-end DDoS protection.

Pros

AlienVault USM

  • The integration setup for syslog forwarding and native web apps partnered with the platform is a very simple setup.
  • Deploying sensors in cloud systems usually follow a pre-defined build flow for ease of sensor deployments and scaling.
  • For perimeter defense, as long as your defended organizational structure uses Active Directory or another LDAP replication type service, vuln scanning and KIDS is a breeze.

  • The Junos OS provides engineers the ability to review past changes and see who made the change which can be a huge advantage when troubleshooting issues that recently manifested themselves in a network. Not all issues pop up right away, so this is a great tool to see how the environment has changed in the recent past.
  • Junos uses a 2 config process to make changes and put into operation, a operational config and a proposed config called a candidate config. This allows engineers making changes to see the entire proposed changes and confirm its accuracy prior to implementing.
  • Configuration changes can be done in several different methods. Once you get comfortable with each, making quick changes can done easily and validated prior to committing to operation.

Cons

AlienVault USM

  • For highly distributed workforce issues, the system requires a lot of third-party integrations to collect data for automation.
  • Customization can be lacking in areas without significant help from their support teams.
  • Building rules for filtering, suppression, and custom alarms can be a steep learning curve, although this is slightly offset by their training offerings.

  • There's not a lot about the SRX that I don't like but if I had to say, I'd say the remote access VPN and associated client app needs improvement and by using a 3rd party as the client app provider this made troubleshooting RA issues much more difficult. For this reason, we do not use the SRX for RA VPNs.

The centralized logging and retention for PCI compliance was our main driver, and it is meeting that need. Otherwise there has been enough frustration with the lack of documentation and the need to customize through the CLI that I would be open to alternatives.

Almost all functions are intuitive, custom logging is not very easy to configure.

I have contacted support many times and every time they addressed the issue and continued until it was resolved. The product is solid, so the overall operation is trouble free.

The best recommendation I can offer is understand the system that is being installed. Knowing how to configure and specific expectations that you expect from the machine. I would say to watch the tutorials and the online video's, get yourself involved with the community forum and ask the questions if you do not understand. Our company did not make the best choice on the computer that the service was installed on and it has led to some adverse effects that did not appear until now, almost 2 years later and needing to re-install the entire system all over again. If you need the help, ask for it. The technical support team at alienvault and community forum members are always there to answer questions.

Alternatives Considered

AlienVault USM

I have not used any other platforms that are supposedly specifically for security only purposes. I have used many management applications such as SCCM, Nagios, Puppet, Chef, OSSEC, etc. AlienVault lacks transparency and customization that I would prefer from a centralized portal. Having to log in to yet another portal gets tiresome. Those procedures which it does accomplish it does very well. The reporting and user interface is much simpler than most software and portals I use.

I love the Cisco ASA but I've become used to the SRX. I am a CLI kind of guy so the SRX works for me. Others may be more GUI based so the ASA may be more comfortable to you. If that's the case then the ASA's ASDM is a solid platform to manage your FW. Junos hasn't gotten this component working and will admit that, but if you're CLI driven, then the SRX is much easier to use and has a lot better context sensitive help in most situations.

  • Although I'm not a part of the budgeting process, I do know that by using Juniper SRXs, we were able to get the products we needed with much less issues and justifications as other product we've purchased in the past.
