In my organization's scenario, the on-premise appliance provides great value as we are a small company with site inter-connectivity. Where I am not too sure of is how exactly the product scales with very large networks with separate Windows and network domains.

Of many of the other vulnerability testing suites I used, this offered the most robust features and, once you learned the UI, was a go-to tool. The reporting was very nice for not only us technical but for reports for management as well that were easy to understand and prioritize fixes.

Pros

  • Up to this point, I have had no issues integrating with a system we currently have in production. while AlienVault stays on top with plugin updates.
  • Te dashboard is very informative when you figure out how to navigate around it and tweaked to your organization needs.
  • Correlation of events is probably my favorite as I normally only need to jump on the AlienVault dashboard to hammer down on network traffic/activity details.

  • User setup for multiple groups
  • Ease of automation, set it and forget it
  • Reporting features were a huge plus

Cons

  • At times I do find navigating the dashboard for very specific functions to be difficult.
  • For entry level security analysts or administrators I feel can get overwhelmed with the amount of data available from a single platform (in a good way)
  • helpful to understand Linux for certain tasks
AJ Gumataotao profile photo
  • Easier way for VM scan custom profile management. A way to determine if there are duplicate scan profiles created to reduce redundancy with multiple administrators.
  • This may have been addressed, but my previous organization had a lot of difficulties integrating Qualysguard with RSAM.
  • Add trending over time capabilities to dashboard.

It is a very well built software and solution for meeting our cybersecurity needs. The staff is always very well responsive with any issues that we have and it is perfect for satisfying FINRA's cybersecurity regulations.

We have been using AlienVault USM Appliance for nearly 3 years. The power and flexibility of the device for IPS and IDS is amazing. We are able to identify threats and stop them before damage can be done.

Implementation

The one thing to remember is where to place the sensors within your organization. It is one thing to collect and analyze data, but collecting the right data is key. This is where AlienVaults experts really help. Instead of trying to sell you a gazillion sensors, they walk you through your network to make sure he sensors are where they need to be so you can achieve your goal. Implementation works so well because they take the time upfront to know your goals before they help you achieve them.

Alternatives Considered

None at the time as the product was purchased before I joined the organization.
AJ Gumataotao profile photo
My previous organization was in the healthcare industry and we actually had Qualysguard, eEye, and Nessus because our customers required specific scan reports from those solutions. However, from a usability perspective, Qualysguard was the best solution.
