Altaro VM Backup

While I am not an IT professional, I can get around and do a lot of things. For a novice user like myself, the UI is fairly straightforward and easy to set-up and manage. If I was delving into more detailed backups and replication (not currently using) I still believe that a novice user like myself would be able to manage. Pricing based on host and not VMs is attractive for the end-user. If you had your VMs stored on a number of different hosts, it could get pricey.

Assure MIMIX

MIMIX is well suited when the organization requires a PLANNED Switch.MIMX will also work for any unplanned switches. However, this is not the most ideal situation and we have had to perform at least once when the older iSeries hardware failed, and the business transactions were on hold, impacting the business. MIMIX support was required to be called upon to assist. We were able to get the new iSeries online within an hour, so thankfully the outage to the business was miminal. It is important that any organization utilizing MIMIX schedule, prepare, and plan for the PLANNED Switch, at least once per year, if not twice per year.

Pros

Altaro VM Backup

  • Fast and simple setup. I didn't need to read through ANY documentation to set up and have a backup running.
  • Easy and cost-effective licensing. I didn't need to count CPU's or VM's or other random facts to work out my licensing. Just how many hosts, and then one of 3 feature levels of which two have unlimited VM licensing. Hosts x Feature Set = Cost.
  • Easy Restores. Backing up is one thing, but restoring and having confidence in the restore is another. It just works, simple and effective.
  • Help is easy to find if you need it. From within the app, it gives you options of email, phone, and live chat, which is usually available even with odd time zones in play.

Assure MIMIX

  • Redundancy - needs to be available at a moment's notice.
  • Protection - the business would be greatly impacted, therefore protection of production systems is key to the business succeeding.
  • Usability - needs to be user-friendly, easy to navigate and operate, as it will be required at any given time.

  • Single file restore is not included in the 2 VM free edition.
  • Can't restore a single SQL database, you have to restore the entire VM.

Assure MIMIX

  • Web interface needs some improvement. I can't recall the exact issue, but I do remember having to refresh the screen every now and then to see the update results as expected.
  • Overall, there were some known bugs in the version the organization was utilizing. These were reported and know to be bugs and hopefully resolved in future release.

The chat is very responsive. They work hard to find you a solution. They are very competent and very friendly. Most of the time they will simply open a request for you and ask to send the support package (bunch of logs and files) and will come back by email, but you can also click on the chat button inside Altaro to talk to someone.

Alternatives Considered

Altaro VM Backup

Altaro brings value to organizations looking at other platforms. It's definitely less expensive overall than Veeam, Datto or Infrascale. The recovery solution for Altaro is very good and reliable. Any organization looking at Veeam should consider Altaro as a potential alternative - depending on requirements. Although lacking in some granular backup/recovery systems, organizations looking at the backup of VMs only - numerous VMs with an off-site cloud location already setup. Costs can potentially increase if numerous versions or long deletion policy needs to be maintained. However such costs would increase on Veeam as well. Solarwinds and Carbonite charge based on selected sizes while Asigra has an amazing deduplication system for VMs, however, Asigra can become pricey with longer deletion/versioning setups as well.

Assure MIMIX

We used MIMIX for its role for iSeries high availability. We used Double Take by Vision Solutions for our production Windows environment. MIMIX is designed for iSeries, and Double Take was designed for Windows. We had VMware virtual environment, running multiple VMs for production ERP Lawson M3, now Infor. Both MIMIX and Double Take played the role well for what needed to be done. Without either MIMIX or DoubleTake, the business would have been impacted.

  • MIMIX had a positive impact, as the organization has had to rely upon the unplanned switch.
  • MIMIX definite must if organization is running i Series, and business needs are 24/7.
  • Without MIMIX in place, the downtime impact to the business would have been great.
