Alteryx Analytics Gallery

Alteryx Analytics Gallery is perhaps less suited if you need an immediate answer to a problem. Each use case requires some understanding of the workflow to implement.

Looker

Looker is excellent when there is a large team and when there is a lot of data required to be integrated. It does an excellent job in visualizations and creating charts. It is less appropriate for smaller teams as it is very expensive. If visualizations require too many customizations then Looker is slightly less appropriate. Overall, it provides great visualizations and drill-down analysis. Visualizations can be improved based on the current technology in the market.

Cons

  • Due to the popularity of the Gallery, finding the exact solution to a problem may be difficult if the solution [isn't] titled correctly.
Michael Wallendjack profile photo
  • New user on-boarding requires some dedicated training. It's not an easy tool to pick up and use immediately.
  • Visualization customizations are still a bit cryptic. Most end users can't figure out how to change a data series' color, for example. It's not intuitive.
  • The ease of development actually makes for a potential nightmare down the road if too many people have developer privileges. There are a lot of potential issues over the longer term if you don't introduce adequate safeguards right at initial implementation.

I can get responses to questions in minutes through their in-app chat feature. They have provided 6 months of LookML training to our analytics team, with weekly calls. They also provided in-office business user training for our entire organization

We find Looker much easier to develop and manage. The LookML central data repository is far more robust and easy to use. The fact that Looker manages the server for you, means you never have any downtime. The other products have you managing all sorts of servers, which is a lot of overhead.

Using Github as the foundation for development is genius. It allows collaborators to work together in a robust, known, trusted team development environment. With that you get all the standard capabilities, like versioning, peer review, auditing, etc.

The Gallery, dependent on the either Alteryx Designer or Server can connect to a large number of data sources.

In Looker it is relatively easy to connect to different databases, from our experience there has been no extra hassle. Looker seems to support all major SQL dialects. Maybe the only thing that is missing is to get data from alternative sources, such as Google Sheets or CSV/Excel.
