Alteryx Analytics Gallery

Alteryx Analytics Gallery is perhaps less suited if you need an immediate answer to a problem. Each use case requires some understanding of the workflow to implement.

Toad Data Point

I have not worked with another tool that covers so many different data stores so easily. I find the Query Builder and the data scrubbing abilities just top-notch and something the analyst needs. Toad Data Point is very good at working with Excel...can output directly to Excel, to a page in an existing spreadsheet (ie: refresh the data), to pivot tables, and can even set up Excel with the SQL behind the scenes so all you have to do is refresh the spreadsheet and Excel will pull the data! If your analysts use the SQL language, Toad Data Point has an extensive SQL editor, customized to the database environment the focus is pointing to...that includes templates, code snippets, SQL history, and more. This editor comes from the very popular Toad database access/development tool with a rich history in the IT world.

Pros

  • Allows users to implement new ideas and workflows
  • Allows users to share solutions to business problems
  • Aides in knowledge transfer and thought leadership
Michael Wallendjack profile photo
  • Accesses and extracts data from 20 or more different data stores.
  • Can include data selection even from data stored in Excel spreadsheets.
  • Can automate a flow of tasks (some call it workflows) to provide an easy and automated solution, freeing the analyst from these types of data processing.
  • Analysts don't need to know the SQL query language at all. Toad Data Point has a comprehensive Query Builder that allows for the selection from a large variety of data stores to be included in a single output data request.
  • The data cleansing ability is top-notch. The analyst can 'fix' data at the data extract time. Of course, filtering (data selection) is an integral part of Toad Data Point...in both locating data to include as well as the data from each data store being included.

Cons

  • Due to the popularity of the Gallery, finding the exact solution to a problem may be difficult if the solution [isn't] titled correctly.
Michael Wallendjack profile photo
  • At times the tool does seem a little slow some speed tweaks would be welcome.
  • To make it even more intuitive adding intellisense would be nice.
  • A data presentation dash would be a nice touch to customize data.

Toad Data Point is a great replacement for the older/obsolete Oracle Discoverer tool. Toad Data Point can easily take over all of Discover's functionality and workflows. Both tools work well with Excel as an output but Toad Data Point can actually read Excel data as a data store...and produce Excel pivot tables, refresh data in the spreadsheets, and more. The OBIEE environment is a different tool in that it is more of an overall data analysis/delivery solution complete with dashboards/alerts/web deployment that includes mobile devices. Toad Data Point does a better job across a range of different data sources but its primary focus is data analysis and data prep...not so much on the presentation side, as of this writing.

In our company we don't share data across teams it's for the owner only. The report distribution is easy to use and the formatting, once you get the hang of it, works well. We are behind a firewall so security has never been a issue.

As with the Toad product line connecting to a data source is as easy as a few clicks and you are seeing the data. Toad has always done a great job with ease of use to connect to the databases you use.
