Alteryx Analytics

Well suited: if an organization already has a lot of running ETLs or pipelines but need to systemize them, Alteryx is a good choice. It would be good to figure out how well Alteryx would be harmonized with the existing components, but in a general sense, it may be well harmonized. Less appropriate: Alteryx is good for "automation", but some data developers and analysts may prefer to remain and keep using SQL tools. One should be careful of not just adding "one more layer or tool" into the existing pipeline and make it more complicated to manage.

Amazon SageMaker

SageMaker is great for serving Jupyter notebooks, particularly if you already use other AWS products, such as S3. SageMaker's model retraining function is useful if you write a few Lambda functions to invoke jobs. Its model serving function is useful if your team has limited resources and is willing to submit to SageMaker's opinions.

Pros

  • Alteryx provides an integrated workflow management environment for data blending, analytics, and reporting. It is also very extensible to be connected to a variety of data connections including major databases (Oracle, etc.), analytics tools (R), and visualization tools such as Tableau through its plugins. Our department used Oracle and Tableau already and it was well integrated with Alteryx.
  • The workflow authoring environment in Desktop is easy to use so that most of the users (if they are a bit skilled data developers or analysts) may not need the training to use its basic functions. Drag and drop interface and icons are intuitive to understand.
  • When running Alteryx workflows, it is easy to monitor and track what's the progress by seeing percentages. It is helpful to balance and manage bandwidths of database servers, especially when to populate large data sets.

  • SageMaker is useful as a managed Jupyter notebook server. Using the notebook instances' IAM roles to grant access to private S3 buckets and other AWS resources is great. Using SageMaker's lifecycle scripts and AWS Secrets Manager to inject connection strings and other secrets is great.
  • SageMaker is good at serving models. The interface it provides is often clunky, but a managed, auto-scaling model server is powerful.
  • SageMaker is opinionated about versioning machine learning models and useful if you agree with its opinions.

Cons

  • The visualization that Alteryx provides can be improved much more than where it stands tonight.
  • It doesn't seem to be able to process Big Data as efficiently as I would have liked.
  • There are a lot of things that you need to learn.
No photo available
  • SageMaker does not allow you to schedule training jobs.
  • SageMaker does not provide a mechanism for easily tracking metrics logged during training.
  • We often fit feature extraction and model pipelines. We can inject the model artifacts into AWS-provided containers, but we cannot inject the feature extractors. We could provide our own container to SageMaker instead, but this is tantamount to serving the model ourselves.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Implementation

Alteryx Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Breadth of Deployment

Our company kept it contained in the marketing department. Other departments may not understand it.

Alternatives Considered

It does about as good as a code-free analytics platform such a Tableau, but does not offer as well refined insights through data visualization.

We have not invested in another machine learning software at this time and so far this has proved very successful with our machine learning teams. As mentioned, I am training these individuals simply on the fundamentals of the software and using it/customizing it for their needs. It has been very easy to do this and has gotten great reviews across the organization so far.

  • One can invest in an Alteryx server which makes publishing "Alteryx analytics apps" easy and thus facilitates sharing of data solutions across teams, it also offers access control so the right users have access to the right stuff
  • Alteryx also offers a feature using which one can receive an email with the results of a workflow attached after its successful completion

  • Alteryx supports connectivity to a whole range of RDBMS applications, stand-alone files, and big data solutions
  • It's easy to create an ODBC connection and connect to almost anything available in the market
  • Alteryx has partnered with a range of third-party firms to build macros and customized connectors to products like SAP
  • Alteryx offers a range of data preparation tools like select, filter, join, union etc., that makes data preparation easy for the end users

Return on Investment

  • Definitely, an increase in employee efficiency. With the right tools and hardware, Alteryx can reduce the processing time significantly.
  • Automation and/or automatic report scheduling frees up a lot of time that can be used elsewhere.
  • Licensing updates are somewhat not handled easily and quite often create issues with modules to run slowly and/or not being active.

  • We have been able to deliver data products more rapidly because we spend less time building data pipelines and model servers.
  • We can prototype more rapidly because it is easy to configure notebooks to access AWS resources.
  • For our use-cases, serving models is less expensive with SageMaker than bespoke servers.
