Alteryx Analytics

Well suited: if an organization already has a lot of running ETLs or pipelines but need to systemize them, Alteryx is a good choice. It would be good to figure out how well Alteryx would be harmonized with the existing components, but in a general sense, it may be well harmonized. Less appropriate: Alteryx is good for "automation", but some data developers and analysts may prefer to remain and keep using SQL tools. One should be careful of not just adding "one more layer or tool" into the existing pipeline and make it more complicated to manage.

Dell Boomi

It is very well suited for moving data from one location to the next (especially in the case of moving data between Salesforce and NetSuite). It is drag-and-drop intuitive. It is less appropriate when you need to run complex sequences of manipulating the data in transit, and also when you need to have thousands of similar items running through the same branch at the same time.

Pros

  • Data ingestion: Alteryx is capable of connecting with a multitude of data sources from SQL databases to cloud-hosted solutions like Salesforce, Tableau, or Google Analytics. Also supports OleDB & ODBC connections.
  • Dynamic data munging: Alteryx has a great variety of processing tools to clean and prep data including: dedupe, formulas, joins, union, sort... Performing these functions really quickly on even moderately equipped laptops or desktops. It's dynamic in that it can easily handle changes in data by allowing extra columns to flow through.
  • Macros: have a process that you are consistently running in separate workflows? Build a macro, be it a batch or iterative, Alteryx can do it. I've built 40-50 macros and use at least 4+ in every workflow I design so data is handled the same way in every workflow for consistency and cutting down on copy/pastes.

  • Moving data between Salesforce and NetSuite. With the great and extensive open API that both of products offer, Boomi allows you to simply connect to the different endpoints, and drag-and-drop to create the workflow. In fact, when we first implemented Boomi, it was so easy to learn and adopt, that we took one of our accountants and turned them into our Boomi admin.
  • We also use it in on-boarding employees. When we first create an employee in our HRIS (SyncHR), it automatically creates and syncs the user across to Concur, Workfront, Motivosity, etc.
  • We also use it to sync project data between Workfront and NetSuite. This allows us to have a simply but robust process in recognizing revenue related to projects and work being performed in Workfront.

Cons

  • I've had issues with the scheduler tool getting frozen or stuck in previous versions. For about the last 2-3 months the latest software version has been much more reliable. Previously I had to restart the Alteryx service on my machine at least once a week, which meant my workflows weren't running while the service had been stuck and data wasn't moving.
  • Some of the connectors, like the Tableau Online connector, should become supported by Alteryx. The online community is fantastic and has created a ton of useful macros and it would be great if Alteryx would adopt, support, and enhance some of the most widely used and useful.

  • Honestly, the user interface. It has a lot of room to improve to get aligned with our products it is working with. The design is intuitive, but somewhat clunky because of the interface. It seems to be about 10-years behind other products in this area. The UI is important, especially when you are trying to attract users that may not have a development background.

I personally have moved to a different position that does not require data analysis tools. I really enjoyed working with Alteryx and think it is a great tool, but have moved to a different organization and role.

Boomi is a great product and crucial to our infrastructure. We have not seen another system that would provide us with the same features and robustness, so there is no reason to not renew.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

They are quick to respond. Sometimes I figure out workarounds before they respond, but I am impatient and try other options. They acknowledge issues and have a Suggestions portal, the knowledge base is helpful too.

Implementation

Alteryx Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Our company kept it contained in the marketing department. Other departments may not understand it.

Alternatives Considered

Alteryx was surely a better option compared to RapidMiner but when compared against IBM SPSS it is behind for advanced analytical techniques and model scoring, visualization capabilities and neural networks functionalities. SPSS also has a diverse range of analytical techniques and models compared to Alteryx. RapidMiner provides a Studio component for design, a Server component, a Hadoop connector called Radoop and a component for stream processing.

While Alteryx server is better suited for this purpose than my desktop tool, it is still capable of sharing data through publishing wherever needed or by building simplistic reports in tool and delivering via email.

Data Integration

Alteryx Analytics8.9
Based on 16 answers
Merging data is easiest among any platform I’ve used. The data sources available is broad and I understand Alteryx is constantly adding to the sources of data used by their customers. I particularly like the ability to schedule reports out of Alteryx. This makes it valuable as tool to do research and ad hoc analysis but also reduce the time spent actually running and delivering reports pre-built

Return on Investment

  • Definitely increased employee efficiency.
  • The company was able to offer more products to better serve the customers. Site selection with a click, more detailed segmentation, etc.
  • The program itself made the job more enjoyable. The ease of the software and also "Lego"-like interface made going to work fun.

  • The ROI is great. Compare Boomi with traditional on-premise integration tools. Organizations don't have to invest money upfront on the entire product suite. ROI can be witnessed with in one year.
