Alteryx Analytics

Well suited: if an organization already has a lot of running ETLs or pipelines but need to systemize them, Alteryx is a good choice. It would be good to figure out how well Alteryx would be harmonized with the existing components, but in a general sense, it may be well harmonized. Less appropriate: Alteryx is good for "automation", but some data developers and analysts may prefer to remain and keep using SQL tools. One should be careful of not just adding "one more layer or tool" into the existing pipeline and make it more complicated to manage.

Dell Boomi

Dell Boomi is a great choice if you are integrating real-time processes with multiple other systems. If you have a web service call that requires transforming the data I think Boomi is the best choice. Where I wouldn't recommend using it is for batch processing. It can do the trick if needed but when a batch process goes down it can be extremely hard to figure out where the problem is. The problem is usually in the data but finding that data can be very tricky when you are processing thousands of transactions at a time.

Pros

  • Alteryx provides an integrated workflow management environment for data blending, analytics, and reporting. It is also very extensible to be connected to a variety of data connections including major databases (Oracle, etc.), analytics tools (R), and visualization tools such as Tableau through its plugins. Our department used Oracle and Tableau already and it was well integrated with Alteryx.
  • The workflow authoring environment in Desktop is easy to use so that most of the users (if they are a bit skilled data developers or analysts) may not need the training to use its basic functions. Drag and drop interface and icons are intuitive to understand.
  • When running Alteryx workflows, it is easy to monitor and track what's the progress by seeing percentages. It is helpful to balance and manage bandwidths of database servers, especially when to populate large data sets.

  • Boomi has a lot of built in connectors that make integrations faster and easier.
  • The tool is easy to use and has great visuals to help understand how a process works. There isn't a large learning curve.
  • Frequent updates to the platform.
  • New connectors are frequently added.
  • Great support documents and community.
  • Real-time integrations.

Cons

  • Excel reporting - reports in PDF are fairly straightforward, but trying to output results in Excel can prove to be tricky/ugly.
  • Chart creation - current chart tool is very basic; needs to be a way to customize the look/feel of a chart more, as well as an easier way to incorporate "big" data that can be easily reported on/viewed.

  • The Data Process step has a cool feature for splitting records. However the XML piece has some reported issues. This is easily overcome with custom Groovy scripting.

I personally have moved to a different position that does not require data analysis tools. I really enjoyed working with Alteryx and think it is a great tool, but have moved to a different organization and role.

Boomi is a great product and crucial to our infrastructure. We have not seen another system that would provide us with the same features and robustness, so there is no reason to not renew.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

They are quick to respond. Sometimes I figure out workarounds before they respond, but I am impatient and try other options. They acknowledge issues and have a Suggestions portal, the knowledge base is helpful too.

Implementation

Alteryx Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Return on Investment

  • Alteryx does an excellent job of integrating consumer and spatial data to calculate and visualize things like locations within a certain drive-time radius.
  • For visualization purposes I had to move the data to excel for some decent graphs.
  • It can become very expensive.

  • Positive would be one integration platform for all applications.
  • Negative Impact - The development of Boomi Knowledge internally and minimally depends on Boomi professional services.
