Alteryx Analytics

I wish I had found and used Alteryx Analytics years ago. Having multiple data sources with a variety of naming conventions for our businesses we spent WEEKS cleaning/reorganizing/renaming fields in our data to be able to consolidate. We did this on one set of reports for one use. Each time we wanted an update this process would need to be repeated. This took tons of useless admin time. Had we had Alteryx we could have created 1 identifier, noted all the different naming conventions or issues, selected the ones we wanted and created the workflow to use it over and over and over again on any data we wanted. Build once - use multiple times. It would have been (and now is) a HUGE time saver. Plus any new anomalies are identified by the program as errors so you can "autocorrect" them in the same workflow. Alteryx is a miracle in my opinion.

Hadoop

  • Less appropriate for small data sets
  • Works well for scenarios with bulk amount of data. They can surely go for Hadoop file system, having offline applications
  • It's not an instant querying software like SQL; so if your application can wait on the crunching of data, then use it
  • Not for real-time applications

Pros

  • Excellent support for the tools through training/white papers and online support.
  • Ease of use - high common sense factor makes the program easy to learn and apply.
  • Compatibility with everything but specifically with commonly used key programs like Tableau.

  • Hadoop is a very cost effective storage solution for businesses’ exploding data sets.
  • Hadoop can store and distribute very large data sets across hundreds of servers that operate, therefore it is a highly scalable storage platform.
  • Hadoop can process terabytes of data in minutes and faster as compared to other data processors.
  • Hadoop File System can store all types of data, structured and unstructured, in nodes across many servers

Cons

  • Cost is a factor - while support and training are "free" the software price is high.
  • It helps to have some good Excel experience to make instant adoption even easier.
  • The trainers tend to go a bit fast so slow learners may need multiple sessions.
Susan Knolla profile photo
  • Security is a piece that's missing from Hadoop - you have to supplement security using Kerberos etc.
  • Hadoop is not easy to learn - there are various modules with little or no documentation
  • Hadoop being open-source, testing, quality control and version control are very difficult

I personally have moved to a different position that does not require data analysis tools. I really enjoyed working with Alteryx and think it is a great tool, but have moved to a different organization and role.

Hadoop is organization-independent and can be used for various purposes ranging from archiving to reporting and can make use of economic, commodity hardware. There is also a lot of saving in terms of licensing costs - since most of the Hadoop ecosystem is available as open-source and is free

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

I found it really useful during my academic projects. Data handling for large data sets was easy with Hadoop. It used to work really fast for bigger data sets. I found it reliable.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Implementation

Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Alternatives Considered

I haven't used any other programs nor have I seen any that do this. I think it stands alone as a tool which allows such ease of use in data organizing and cleansing. While formulas or pivot tables in excel can help they are not easily repeatable across a variety of (dirty) data sources whereas Alteryx is.

Return on Investment

  • It gets the job done fast.
  • It lends itself well for people with a less-technical aptitude to understand the data process.
  • It empower the user to come up with any possible solution to a problem.
Nick Lensing profile photo
  • Positive: it is powerful, and it allows you to manage your data on a very big scale.
  • Negative: since its computationally expensive, the laptops were upgraded and that was pretty heavy on financials.
  • Positive: it also has given us the power to make data-driven decisions anytime and anywhere.
