Alteryx Analytics

It is very well suited for mid-sized data operations. One person working on a project is ideal. I have not used Alteryx in a collaborative project, so can't say for sure. It is quite powerful and compares well with the competitors. If you have data from disparate sources, it helps to have a tool like Alteryx.

Pros

  • It can independently generate required analytics instead of having to require specialists.
  • The ability to read and write in a multitude of formats: from Excel, Access tables, Tableau and Teradata to MapInfo, ESRI, Google Earth, etc.
  • Single drag and drop workflow instead of multiple tools.

Hadoop is truly a distributed, open source cloud architecture which is capable of solving many problems to which there was no efficient solution before. I would definitely recommend trying it

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

I found it really useful during my academic projects. Data handling for large data sets was easy with Hadoop. It used to work really fast for bigger data sets. I found it reliable.

Reliability and Availability

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Implementation

Alteryx Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Our company kept it contained in the marketing department. Other departments may not understand it.

Alternatives Considered

It does about as good as a code-free analytics platform such a Tableau, but does not offer as well refined insights through data visualization.

Not used any other product than Hadoop and I don't think our company will switch to any other product, as Hadoop is providing excellent results. Our company is growing rapidly, Hadoop helps to keep up our performance and meet customer expectations. We also use HDFS which provides very high bandwidth to support MapReduce workloads.

Collaboration and Sharing

Alteryx Analytics7.2
Based on 16 answers
Alteryx is great in terms of report sharing, since it allows us to email the files with the Email tool. This is the best ever easily implemented functionality with Alteryx. Also, formatting is easy in Alteryx - we can write data to templates and use the dynamic input tool for formatting purposes.

Everybody hates anonymous users browsing through their data. Hadoop Distributed File System supports authorization through the traditional file permission model as well as ACLs (Access Control Lists). Therefore, Hadoop makes it possible to control access to files and directories for users and groups. Also Hadoop and its related components do offer built-in audit logging which helps in tracking user actions.

Hadoop8.7
Based on 10 answers
  • Ease of merging data is a major reason for Hadoop's success, with a growing number of tools available for easy ingestion of data from disparate sources, some examples are Apache Flume and Apache Kafka.
  • Many major database vendors are now providing tools and plugins to pull data from the database into Hadoop for offline processing.

Return on Investment

  • Faster data processes (appending various data)
  • Non-gis people have been able to to geocode/build trade areas (this is positive and negative)
  • Quickly generate a standardized way of research processes

  • We had a large ROI due to improved performance and expedited reporting - our clients were happier and business improved
  • Our storage costs reduced
  • Our infrastructure costs reduced - we used old hardware for our Hadoop cluster
