Alteryx Analytics

Well suited: if an organization already has a lot of running ETLs or pipelines but need to systemize them, Alteryx is a good choice. It would be good to figure out how well Alteryx would be harmonized with the existing components, but in a general sense, it may be well harmonized. Less appropriate: Alteryx is good for "automation", but some data developers and analysts may prefer to remain and keep using SQL tools. One should be careful of not just adding "one more layer or tool" into the existing pipeline and make it more complicated to manage.

JMP Statistical Discovery Software from SAS

Many organizations have seen their analytical capabilities, and the results from them, plateau. Of these, we've observed, that most of them didn't appreciate that they could do (even) better. These companies should definitely consider JMP. Any company that is research-based can benefit from accelerating their research, learning more in less time, effort and cost, with JMP's tools. Basically, any organization that is hungry enough for improvement to seek out better ways is suitable for JMP. Those who are happy with their current performance are not likely to consider the changes, though they were not major impediments by our clients, required.

Pros

  • Cleaning datasets
  • Preparing data for analyzing
  • Customer data analytics
  • Transforming data from one format to other
Sanket Bharaswadkar profile photo
  • 1 - Coding is not required: I've used other tools (Python, Mathlab, and R) and coding is required for all of them. With JMP, you just load the data, see it in a table and start working right away. I see it as a statistical version of MS Excel.
  • 2 - Powerful and easy regression: I love how easy, intuitive and powerful JMP is for running regression models. It was great for trying to fit the best regression models.
  • 3 - Smooth OS integration: I use in both macOS and Windows and both run just fine!

Cons

  • Poor documentation
  • Costly
  • Overkill for simple tasks
  • Not many options for data visualization
Sanket Bharaswadkar profile photo
  • Simple quick filters at the top of each column of the data table.
  • Update tutorial materials to match the layout of the newest version (13.1), or provide a quick reference guide showing what changed between the previous version and the current one.
  • Window arrangement could be improved and automated. When multiple windows are open (tables, charts, reports, journals) it could get confusing to get to the right place quickly.

I personally have moved to a different position that does not require data analysis tools. I really enjoyed working with Alteryx and think it is a great tool, but have moved to a different organization and role.

I've mentioned this earlier, but the licensing agreements are very prohibitive. I work with a company where my role has become less and less doing my own analytics and more and more trying to help other people in that role. As we are bringing more people "up to speed" it's hard to justify licenses for 2-3 people when they aren't full time, Six Sigma black belts just looking at stats all day. A floating license option would make this a no-brainer, since these people could continue their other work and add JMP usage as they grow their skills, but this is not something JMP/SAS has offered.

Usability

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

Once you figure out the bells and whistles/ins and outs of JMP, it becomes an intuitive, powerful tool. However, the learning curve is very steep; I think the product might be borderline unusable for those without at least a basic understanding of inferential statistics. However, even if you have a statistics background, the learning curve is still steep due to a confusing user interface, a weak help/search tool (at least within the program for Mac users; the online help is very useful), and a general lack of intuitiveness.

Reliability and Availability

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

The SAS support team came on site to give a presentation to our entire team. They answer questions immediately and provide insight specific to your needs. They also provided a video conference to get me started with the software, which was really useful. There are textbooks written on scripting and JMP usage, which were provided to me as well.

Implementation

Alteryx Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Breadth of Deployment

Our company kept it contained in the marketing department. Other departments may not understand it.

JMP is used across the department, and I imagine that it is used in many departments across the university for research.

Alternatives Considered

Although microstrategy is a good tool, Alteryx is a unique tool in terms of providing such capabilities.
Rishi Bavishi, CSSGB, CAPM profile photo
I choose JMP because I can accomplish various analyses in one place (no need to move my data around). JMP also can handle huge data sets.

Collaboration and Sharing

Doesn't really allow for much collaboration in real time other than sharing flat files with coworkers. Have to utilize a 3rd party cloud hosting platform in order to try to collaborate on a workflow.

We share JMP files through other file sharing methods, like Google Drive and Dropbox, because the sharing capabilities are not the strongest.

Return on Investment

  • It gets the job done fast.
  • It lends itself well for people with a less-technical aptitude to understand the data process.
  • It empower the user to come up with any possible solution to a problem.

  • JMP tech support is great, and very helpful. It allows me to go beyond my current experience with JMP and learn new things by asking questions. This empowers me to solve problems using JMP when no other tools available
  • One-stop-shop Stat analysis tool is awesome. Especially now with powerful Reliability module
