Alteryx Analytics

Well suited: if an organization already has a lot of running ETLs or pipelines but need to systemize them, Alteryx is a good choice. It would be good to figure out how well Alteryx would be harmonized with the existing components, but in a general sense, it may be well harmonized. Less appropriate: Alteryx is good for "automation", but some data developers and analysts may prefer to remain and keep using SQL tools. One should be careful of not just adding "one more layer or tool" into the existing pipeline and make it more complicated to manage.

Depending on organization size and the amount of data that you collect, that will strongly determine if this is appropriate for you. For less complex scenarios, I may suggest Excel/Google Sheets because you're probably already familiar with the tools. I only suggest it if you have more basic things to analyze.

Pros

  • User-friendly interface - the tool structure and general workspace are very easy to pick up on. Short learning curve from "no experience" to "beginner user".
  • Standardization - modules/wizards allow a single tool to generate results for multiple clients, all through the use of a few actions/inputs.
  • Analytics - wide range of statistical analytics tools makes it easy for a user to look at data and provide simple summary statistics, while also having the ability to build advanced regression models.

  • Incredibly advanced analytics tool that is even more capable if you learn how to use LookML which is Looker's custom programming language.
  • Quick access to the raw data that is being visualized allows you to spot check for data integrity.
  • My usage with Looker is limited because of our integration but, having seen their updates over time, the integrations with Slack, Salesforce, and other tools appear to greatly improve organizations' workflows.

Cons

  • Poor documentation
  • Costly
  • Overkill for simple tasks
  • Not many options for data visualization

  • The ability to connect to different data sources like Facebook and Mixpanel.
  • Visualization can be made better.

I will likely continue to use Alteryx because it allows quick, customizable data analysis. Often, I will be given a business question, which I might not know how to answer, but after getting into Alteryx, dragging and dropping some tools, I can formulate the answer. At the same time, this is definitely a niche software (not something that would ever be adopted by my entire company), which makes it a bit less appealing to some.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

I can get responses to questions in minutes through their in-app chat feature. They have provided 6 months of LookML training to our analytics team, with weekly calls. They also provided in-office business user training for our entire organization

Implementation

Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Breadth of Deployment

Our company kept it contained in the marketing department. Other departments may not understand it.

Looker has been adopted company-wide, and Looker dashboards are displayed on screens throughout the office. It is the single source of truth, and as the company grows, so will the number of Looker users.

Alternatives Considered

It does about as good as a code-free analytics platform such a Tableau, but does not offer as well refined insights through data visualization.

RJMetrics - Looker is clearly better than RJMetrics. RJMetrics was getting the connector ready for Mixpanel and they were working on one for Facebook. But we had too many issues with it. The data had to be taken from MySQL and ported into their data warehouse and it took hours to do that. The customer services turn around time wasn't great either.

Collaboration and Sharing

Alteryx Analytics7.2
Based on 16 answers
Alteryx is great in terms of report sharing, since it allows us to email the files with the Email tool. This is the best ever easily implemented functionality with Alteryx. Also, formatting is easy in Alteryx - we can write data to templates and use the dynamic input tool for formatting purposes.

Collaboration is very easy in Looker. You can always share "looks" (analyses), reports, dashboards etc. with co-workers. Everybody has his/her own "space" to play around. People can simply share and schedule all pieces or have them delivered as CSV, HTML, etc.. Even collaboration on data modelling layer is possible! Access control and permission settings are very detailed and granular.

Data Integration

I love Alteryx where it can merge data from multiple data sources. The output options are amazing and we can analyze the data however we want.

Looker8.3
Based on 37 answers
Looker isn't designed for merging data from separate data sources, unless it's already living in the same database. However, the software connects well to the many different database technologies out there, with a lack of support for APIs (Salesforce, Google products like Analytics/AdWords, etc.), which is crucial for digital companies especially in marketing and today's API economy. Real-time requirements are definitely possible.
