Alteryx Analytics

Well suited: if an organization already has a lot of running ETLs or pipelines but need to systemize them, Alteryx is a good choice. It would be good to figure out how well Alteryx would be harmonized with the existing components, but in a general sense, it may be well harmonized. Less appropriate: Alteryx is good for "automation", but some data developers and analysts may prefer to remain and keep using SQL tools. One should be careful of not just adding "one more layer or tool" into the existing pipeline and make it more complicated to manage.

Microsoft Access

Microsoft Access is great for integrating with .NET for both stand-alone and web-based solutions. Since it is so widely-used, it is fairly easy to find people in your existing work pool who can use it, and also easier to find new applicants who can hit the ground running with this technology. It is terrific for small businesses or small departments within larger organizations who want to be in control of their own simple projects and prototyping. It is well-suited for environments where security is locked down but employees still need to accomplish simple programming tasks.

Pros

  • It can independently generate required analytics instead of having to require specialists.
  • The ability to read and write in a multitude of formats: from Excel, Access tables, Tableau and Teradata to MapInfo, ESRI, Google Earth, etc.
  • Single drag and drop workflow instead of multiple tools.

  • Microsoft Access is great at cranking out quick solutions for simple programming problems
  • Once Access has been learned, the same concepts are readily transferable to create more complex VBA macros in Excel, Word, and other Microsoft Office products.
  • It is easy to integrate with most other Windows-based back-end databases such as SQL and Oracle.
  • It can be placed on websites to allow remote users to access the data

Cons

  • Improve work flow in modules, sometimes buggy when dealing with multiple files
  • On-screen wizard could help demonstrate common best practices
  • Add more tools that could benefit the user without them having to create macros

  • Sharing an Access database with users of mixed Windows operating systems can lead to data integrity problems.
  • Security is only basic, so for sensitive data, a more robust back-end should be implemented.
  • Files can grow to an ungainly size, so periodic database compaction is necessary. The larger the files grow, naturally performance suffers.

I personally have moved to a different position that does not require data analysis tools. I really enjoyed working with Alteryx and think it is a great tool, but have moved to a different organization and role.

I and the rest of my team will renew our Microsoft Access in the future because we use and maintain many different applications and databases created using Microsoft Access so we will need to maintain them in the future. Additionally, it is a standard at our place of work so it is at $0 cost to us to use. Another reason for renewing Microsoft Access is that we just don' t have the resources needed to extend into a network of users so we need to remain a single-desktop application at this time.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

Microsoft Access is easy to use. It is compatible with spreadsheets. It is a very good data management tool. There is scope to save a large amount of data in one place. For using this database, one does not need much training, can be shared among multiple users. This database has to sort and filtering features which seem to be very useful.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

I don't think the program has ever failed me. It is one of those programs where there is always a solution if you know where to look.

Implementation

Alteryx Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Breadth of Deployment

Our company kept it contained in the marketing department. Other departments may not understand it.

Alternatives Considered

Alteryx is in a world of its own compared to other products I've used or tested. Previous to this software, I mainly used MapInfo Pro or ArcMap, but they are quite different. Obviously MapInfo and ArcMap have the upper hand when it comes to visualiztaion while Alteryx wins out in terms of ease-of-use and quick data analysis.

Microsoft Access can be used on the Windows platform, which most organizations use, especially our own, which is one of the reasons why we selected Microsoft Access. Access was also part of the standard Windows image that our company uses when imaging desktops and laptops so our users already own licenses for Microsoft Access so it was cost effective in that front. We could only dedicate 1-2 resources at any given time to managing our solution, so Microsoft Access allowed us to do that instead of SQL Server which would require more of a standard database management team. Lastly, using a desktop solution such as Microsoft Access allowed us to reduce the security risk by not having to host a server on the network for our database; the Microsoft Access database wraps up into a simple file which can then be placed anywhere on the internal network.

Return on Investment

  • Definitely, an increase in employee efficiency. With the right tools and hardware, Alteryx can reduce the processing time significantly.
  • Automation and/or automatic report scheduling frees up a lot of time that can be used elsewhere.
  • Licensing updates are somewhat not handled easily and quite often create issues with modules to run slowly and/or not being active.

  • Our department has seen a vast increase in patient satisfaction by providing our customer service representatives with a quick and easy-to-use tool written within Microsoft Access that helps the patient decide which location is closest to them where they can get their service provided from.
  • Employees have had increased efficiency by using the tools that we have provided within Microsoft Access because our tools perform all of the legwork for our employees. They no longer have to perform various look-ups or comparisons of data to get the answers that they were looking for. This allows our employees to take more calls and to enter more orders during the course of a work day.
  • Employees are already familiar with Microsoft tools so using a published Microsoft Project already reduces the learning curve necessary for a user who may not be computer-savvy.
