Alteryx Analytics

I wish I had found and used Alteryx Analytics years ago. Having multiple data sources with a variety of naming conventions for our businesses we spent WEEKS cleaning/reorganizing/renaming fields in our data to be able to consolidate. We did this on one set of reports for one use. Each time we wanted an update this process would need to be repeated. This took tons of useless admin time. Had we had Alteryx we could have created 1 identifier, noted all the different naming conventions or issues, selected the ones we wanted and created the workflow to use it over and over and over again on any data we wanted. Build once - use multiple times. It would have been (and now is) a HUGE time saver. Plus any new anomalies are identified by the program as errors so you can "autocorrect" them in the same workflow. Alteryx is a miracle in my opinion.

Microsoft Azure

Azure, and specifically the ML-related products, are great for startups that are looking to move tasks requiring greater processing-power off of on-premise machines. Azure has some great products, and if one of the use-cases greatly benefits your company's backend infrastructure optimization, then it's definitely a must-have. Otherwise, it is worth looking at other cheaper, more general cloud computing services, like Google Compute Engine and DigitalOcean.

Pros

  • Alteryx provides an integrated workflow management environment for data blending, analytics, and reporting. It is also very extensible to be connected to a variety of data connections including major databases (Oracle, etc.), analytics tools (R), and visualization tools such as Tableau through its plugins. Our department used Oracle and Tableau already and it was well integrated with Alteryx.
  • The workflow authoring environment in Desktop is easy to use so that most of the users (if they are a bit skilled data developers or analysts) may not need the training to use its basic functions. Drag and drop interface and icons are intuitive to understand.
  • When running Alteryx workflows, it is easy to monitor and track what's the progress by seeing percentages. It is helpful to balance and manage bandwidths of database servers, especially when to populate large data sets.

  • One of the Main Offerings that Azure provides is PaaS which is quite mature compared to other cloud providers in market.
  • PaaS support in from developing an application to cloud till deploying it. PaaS support complete life cycle of an application: Building Testing, Deploying, Managing and Updating.
  • Microsoft operates across the globe and has the highest number of data centers. It operates in 34 regions and are about to open 4 more regions. This is one of the biggest advantages over all the competitors.
  • Azure has the hybrid capability unlike AWS cloud [which has] only approach. Azure provides us the ability to create hybrid environments allowing us to leverage on premise resources and the benefits of cloud. Azure can also help in building Hybrid applications.

Cons

  • Excel reporting - reports in PDF are fairly straightforward, but trying to output results in Excel can prove to be tricky/ugly.
  • Chart creation - current chart tool is very basic; needs to be a way to customize the look/feel of a chart more, as well as an easier way to incorporate "big" data that can be easily reported on/viewed.

  • There is no option to customize RAM which you can do with Google
  • Customization of processors such as core , GPU etc. is not possible currently, and we have to choose from available options
  • A few Technical queries should be allowed in the basic subscription

I will likely continue to use Alteryx because it allows quick, customizable data analysis. Often, I will be given a business question, which I might not know how to answer, but after getting into Alteryx, dragging and dropping some tools, I can formulate the answer. At the same time, this is definitely a niche software (not something that would ever be adopted by my entire company), which makes it a bit less appealing to some.

To be honest, it's worked well for what we've needed and it would be a huge pain to convert everything over to another cloud service. Unless the price becomes too obtrusive, there really isnt any reason we'd want to move our product off of Azure

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Implementation

There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

As I have mentioned before the issue with my Oracle Mismatch Version issues that have put a delay on moving one of my platforms will justify my 7 rating.

Alternatives Considered

Alteryx was surely a better option compared to RapidMiner but when compared against IBM SPSS it is behind for advanced analytical techniques and model scoring, visualization capabilities and neural networks functionalities. SPSS also has a diverse range of analytical techniques and models compared to Alteryx. RapidMiner provides a Studio component for design, a Server component, a Hadoop connector called Radoop and a component for stream processing.

Honestly in my opinion there is no one winner in this area. Both Azure and AWS are great in their own way. Pricewise it all depends in where you're from. Options are very similar and quality of what you get as well as the customer service are both great.

Return on Investment

  • It gets the job done fast.
  • It lends itself well for people with a less-technical aptitude to understand the data process.
  • It empower the user to come up with any possible solution to a problem.

  • Combined server needs and backup needs in one solution.
  • Possibility to switch off computer at night and weekend saving lots of $$.
  • Quick deployment.
