Alteryx Analytics

Well suited: if an organization already has a lot of running ETLs or pipelines but need to systemize them, Alteryx is a good choice. It would be good to figure out how well Alteryx would be harmonized with the existing components, but in a general sense, it may be well harmonized. Less appropriate: Alteryx is good for "automation", but some data developers and analysts may prefer to remain and keep using SQL tools. One should be careful of not just adding "one more layer or tool" into the existing pipeline and make it more complicated to manage.

Microsoft R

Revolution Analytics is a very compelling product for Big Data Analytics. It allows distributed computing over multiple hadoop nodes thus allowing HDFS to do its role cleanly i.e. cheap massive storage and it does good job of running algorithms using R or similar programming language on Hadoop. It would be definitely advantage for the organization who uses either R or SAS as their statistical model development tool as Rev-R support both the platforms. Overall, very positive experience with Rev-R.

Pros

  • Cleaning datasets
  • Preparing data for analyzing
  • Customer data analytics
  • Transforming data from one format to other
Sanket Bharaswadkar profile photo
  • It allows distributed algorithm runs on Hadoop HDFS cluster
  • It allows using different file formats such as SAS7BAT files or complex files in tab or comma delimited making data munging easier
  • It provides scalable solutions by allowing users to re-use R scripts and distributing the computing over nodes through RHadoop

Cons

  • Expanding more functionality is nice to have.
  • Better input and deletion of links between operations.
Rishi Bavishi, CSSGB, CAPM profile photo
  • When I reviewed the product - release D, at that time, "decision forest algorithm" was not available.
  • The tool needs to be more integrated with other data infrastructure tools such as Teradata, Informatica etc. as well as may be with new Hadoop distribution platforms such as Cloudera or Hortonworks so the users don't have to install the tool from scratch
  • I would also like to see improved capability around GUI and integration with other ecosystem. As the Big Data ecosystem would evolve in next 2-3 years, I would like to see Rev-R becoming more compatible with start-ups as well.

Likelihood to Renew

Alteryx Analytics6.5
Based on 14 answers
Alteryx has become integral to my job and to the expectation of upper management. They have now become accustomed to the lightening quick turnaround that Alteryx can provide. Not renewing Alteryx would take our department, and me, back to what would seem like the dark ages. Additionally, Alteryx (the company) is very aggressive in improving and upgrading Alteryx (the program) on a continual basis. It is very clear that they are in constant search for new features, capabilities and improvements. They do not rest on their laurels.

In general, Revolution Analytics brings a lot of value to the organization. The renewal decision would be based on return on investment in terms of quantified actionable insights that are getting generated against the cost of the product. Additionally, market brand of the tool and reputation risk in terms of possible acquisition and its impact to overall organizational analytic strategy would be considered as well.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

Reliability and Availability

Alteryx Analytics10.0

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Implementation

Alteryx Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Breadth of Deployment

Our company kept it contained in the marketing department. Other departments may not understand it.

Alternatives Considered

Although microstrategy is a good tool, Alteryx is a unique tool in terms of providing such capabilities.
Rishi Bavishi, CSSGB, CAPM profile photo
My understanding is Revolution Analytics Enterprise version is not cheap. Thus alternatives for the software could be Hadoop/HDFS level programming using Python and Mahout to achieve same distributed computing. Additionally, Cloudera is coming up with new data science tool called Oryx, which could be competitor to Rev-R. But, the tool selection at every organization would depend on the strategy and cost that is budgeted.

Collaboration and Sharing

Alteryx Analytics7.2

There are some formats that need to be worked on in Alteryx for example using "%" in reporting as you have to go through few extra steps to build such special characters and it makes it a little annoying. It also needs a small fix on when you share data in emails to make it better visualized.

Data Integration

Good integration with a wide variety of data sources, its ease of use in connecting to databases is much to be desired though.

Return on Investment

  • Definitely, an increase in employee efficiency. With the right tools and hardware, Alteryx can reduce the processing time significantly.
  • Automation and/or automatic report scheduling frees up a lot of time that can be used elsewhere.
  • Licensing updates are somewhat not handled easily and quite often create issues with modules to run slowly and/or not being active.

  • Faster time-to-market on analytics and insights
  • Reduction on Level of Effort in terms of running complex algorithmm thus increased job satisfaction
  • Improved job empowerment and skills/competency re-use.
