Alteryx Analytics

More often than not, Alteryx can handle any situation or scenario thrown at it. Some may take a little more "trickery" along the way, but for the most part it is fairly easy to get from point A (data) to point B (results/report). And the nice thing is is that there is more than one way to produce the same result - two people with two different mindsets can ultimately create the same thing, but do so in a way that is better suited for their skill level.

iHub is a decent enough environment that it serves our needs. We can have unlimited users and it can tie into AD although we do not use that feature currently. It is a decent place to store all of the reports in one location, even though for us it is not visually appealing to the end users.iHub is not a place where you want to create robust/interactive dashboards for end users to drill through and follow a "story".

Pros

  • It can independently generate required analytics instead of having to require specialists.
  • The ability to read and write in a multitude of formats: from Excel, Access tables, Tableau and Teradata to MapInfo, ESRI, Google Earth, etc.
  • Single drag and drop workflow instead of multiple tools.

  • It is fairly easy to set the sharing rules for a report/dashboard.
  • They have a decent amount of time frame options for setting a schedule to generate a report.
  • The support is mostly helpful and timely if you have an issue.

Cons

  • Improve work flow in modules, sometimes buggy when dealing with multiple files
  • On-screen wizard could help demonstrate common best practices
  • Add more tools that could benefit the user without them having to create macros

  • Setting up a "dashboard" is extremely lacking in functionality. The different chart widgets you place on the page do not interact with each other. When you select an item from one do not expect it to highlight or filter another.
  • The speed and stability are not great, but maybe that is just our environment not being up to snuff...even though we are above the "recommended" settings.
  • The main GUI for a user is TERRIBLE. You log into a File Tree format where you have to navigate folders to reach the correct dashboard. There are ways around this, but it would either require an expensive payment to the Professional Services team to revamp to UI or another option they gave us was to create the "Default Dashboard" and provide that link to users and in that Dashboard, you use a new tab to include the navigation back to the main screen so that at least on the initial load the user is taken to a friendly looking dashboard instead of a file tree.

I personally have moved to a different position that does not require data analysis tools. I really enjoyed working with Alteryx and think it is a great tool, but have moved to a different organization and role.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Implementation

Alteryx Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Alternatives Considered

Although microstrategy is a good tool, Alteryx is a unique tool in terms of providing such capabilities.

Our instance of iHub does not stack up against the other larger BI tools out today. It is a good place to store reports in a central location that allows users to run very specific reports on demand, but it is not a place I would want to store all of my "dashboards". As far as holding individual reports that are specific to an individual need, it is a great tool. If you want to create a report that will be used as a Template for a Form or a Label, iHub is a good choice to store and schedule the report or call it via API to generate it and return it to your calling app.

Collaboration and Sharing

Alteryx Analytics7.2
Based on 16 answers
It’s easy to give licenses and work amongst teams. Once a report is created it can be shared with colleagues who might want to use the processes built but add more relevant parameters to the data. An example might be a GL report ran by finance but procurement could use the same report and limit to PPV for their own analysis of a unique cost

It is not the easiest solution for distributing reports to various users but by no means is it hard. You can do just about everything by selecting a checkbox and a dropdown followed by the appropriate "wizard" to copy/move/share/etc. The issue is that you must share EVERYTHING and if you forget one thing then the end user will get a report that generates in an error stating they do not have access.

Data Integration

Good integration with a wide variety of data sources, its ease of use in connecting to databases is much to be desired though.

We have been able to connect to most of the DB's we have needed. If you use a custom driver, make sure it remains up to date. We were used a SQL driver instead of the default OpenText driver and after updating SQL Manager the driver broke. Switching the reports to use the OpenText default fixed the issue though so that is a plus one for OpenText.

Return on Investment

  • Faster data processes (appending various data)
  • Non-gis people have been able to to geocode/build trade areas (this is positive and negative)
  • Quickly generate a standardized way of research processes
