Alteryx Analytics

Well suited: if an organization already has a lot of running ETLs or pipelines but need to systemize them, Alteryx is a good choice. It would be good to figure out how well Alteryx would be harmonized with the existing components, but in a general sense, it may be well harmonized. Less appropriate: Alteryx is good for "automation", but some data developers and analysts may prefer to remain and keep using SQL tools. One should be careful of not just adding "one more layer or tool" into the existing pipeline and make it more complicated to manage.

QlikView

QlikView is well suited if the data can be presented in a well data model for agile and flexible data discovery. Not that well suited if used to do financial reporting and analysis where complex and dynamic financial relationships/hierarchies (e.g COA) need to be included.

Pros

  • User-friendly interface - the tool structure and general workspace are very easy to pick up on. Short learning curve from "no experience" to "beginner user".
  • Standardization - modules/wizards allow a single tool to generate results for multiple clients, all through the use of a few actions/inputs.
  • Analytics - wide range of statistical analytics tools makes it easy for a user to look at data and provide simple summary statistics, while also having the ability to build advanced regression models.

  • Qlikview has an excellent online community support. This was probably the best part of buying the project. I had never worked in BI before purchasing Qlikview but after a short one-week class, I was up and running. Whenever I got stuck, I reviewed previous posts or posted a question myself. The questions were almost always answered within a couple of hours. The fantastic community really helped me learn the product.
  • Qlikview is a great product and very powerful. It is not always easy learning all the formulas but for those who know it, it can do almost anything you want a BI tool to do. It is fantastic at integrating multiple sources of information.
  • Qlikview provides a lot of free demo dashboards which are fantastic to learn from. They are open so you can see exactly how they were designed behind the scene. The variety of boards are a great strawman or baseline to use for almost any BI initiative that people take on.

Cons

  • Poor documentation
  • Costly
  • Overkill for simple tasks
  • Not many options for data visualization
Sanket Bharaswadkar profile photo
  • If you are looking to analyze real-time data, QlikView is probably not the right tool for you. It uses static pre-loaded data, rather than live data from an external data source.

I personally have moved to a different position that does not require data analysis tools. I really enjoyed working with Alteryx and think it is a great tool, but have moved to a different organization and role.

The main reason why I don't give this a 10 vs 8 is because of Qlikview's licensing model. They charge you one license per document. So if you have a user that accesses 3 QlikView files, it will cost you 3 document licenses. Instead I do hope Qlikview eventually moves towards a single user license. They already have something like this but its much more expensive +3x more than document license. For smaller companies they should consider lowering their price so it's more favorable. Choosing a BI reporting platform is a huge decision and will affect the future reporting capabilities of the company. A company rarely sets on one tool and then migrates to another tool. Its a huge effort to do this. With that in mind, getting more companies to choose Qlikview with a low price point will allow the entire Qlikview community to grow as a whole.

Usability

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

Dashboards are easy to use. They are very Excel-like with HTML5 capabilities. Data visualization is good.

The system requires minimum training to get user up and running. It just takes one hour to get up and running with building basic dashboards and one all day session for sophisticated dashboard building. It is intuitive.

We see this in our user adoption. We went from 6 users/day consuming dashboards to over 200 in 1.5 years.

We have 40-50 power users authoring dashboards. They have development licenses. My team in IT used to have to build all dashboards. Our capacity has grown from 3 to 50. Most of these users are analyst types good in Excel. A few power users can write SQL to build QVD models

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Implementation

Alteryx Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

QlikView were here for a few days, and it was up and running. It was very fast.

Where it fell short, is they did the implementation in demo mode, and didn't initially work with us to help us scale. For example, should we consider a load balancer and multiple servers?. How much capacity can this environment handle from a data and user perspective. We had to learn on own by trial and error. We are bringing them in to do an architectural assessment, but we have to pay for this.

We are now bringing them back in for architectural assessment. It is a fee based engagement.

Alternatives Considered

Alteryx was surely a better option compared to RapidMiner but when compared against IBM SPSS it is behind for advanced analytical techniques and model scoring, visualization capabilities and neural networks functionalities. SPSS also has a diverse range of analytical techniques and models compared to Alteryx. RapidMiner provides a Studio component for design, a Server component, a Hadoop connector called Radoop and a component for stream processing.

The only other product I have used for reporting is putting data into Excel and creating pivot tables. The ability to connect directly to multiple databases and other data sources is vastly superior.

Collaboration and Sharing

You can select the filters/parameters that you would like to analyze and share it in real-time. The recipient can then see that selection, modify it, and as they modify the shared dashboard, it will update dashboards.

Return on Investment

  • The ease of use of this tool allows your data team to get off the ground quickly and efficiently.

  • Less ad hoc requests (i.e. a user asking a developer to generate a dataset, export to excel, and send to them)
  • More analytically driven managers able to quickly use data to make critical decision
  • Increased Employee Efficiency
