Alteryx Analytics

More often than not, Alteryx can handle any situation or scenario thrown at it. Some may take a little more "trickery" along the way, but for the most part it is fairly easy to get from point A (data) to point B (results/report). And the nice thing is is that there is more than one way to produce the same result - two people with two different mindsets can ultimately create the same thing, but do so in a way that is better suited for their skill level.

RStudio

Well suited: For anyone interested in data analysis. R can help you do a simple exploratory analysis to increase your R Square with a boosted decision tree! It's probably one of the most comprehensive analytics tools.Less appropriate: Maybe if you have a team more focused on business and less on data analysis (marketers, salespeople, for instance), RStudio might not be the best, since the learning curve is complicated.

Pros

  • Designing dashboards is very easy and intuitive in Alteryx. Although some form of analytical aptitude is needed, most of it is very user friendly.
  • Embedding R or Python Code is fairly straightforward in Alteryx. This makes it very sophisticated for data analysis and predictive data modelling.
  • Effective mathematical calculations-- which are difficult to code in SQL-- are very easy to write in Alteryx.

  • Rstudio is very customizable. You can easily change font colors, sizes, and screen layout. I am particular about how I like my IDE setup, so this is a big plus for me.
  • Rstudio allows you to look at datasets in your workspace with the click of a button. I do a lot of data manipulation, so I am constantly having to look at datasets after operations to make sure they look correct. The view option in Rstudio makes checking datasets very fast.
  • Finally, I love the way Rstudio manages plotting. Your plots can be viewed in one of the panels. Those plots can easily be copy/pasted or exported into a variety of file types. You can also magnify the plots and scroll between plots to look at previous plots.

Cons

  • Faster speed of query
  • More complex join capability. Some more experienced users would like to make more complex joins after the data is in process map rather than a complete preparation before including in process map
  • Connection with Power BI, Tableu, or other graphical data tools would make more seamless intelligence

  • Sometimes Rstudio crashes when you work with big datasets.
  • I've had some issues installing packages, which is very annoying. Sometimes I can install packages on my PC but not on my Mac, and vice versa.
  • Rstudio is not exactly a lightweight IDE, so it is not ideal for computationally intensive tasks.

Rstudio is my go - to language for anything involving analysis. It has far more capabilities for data analysis than Python (in my opinion). New packages for novel analytical techniques are often published. Rstudio continues to implement great updates every few months as well. Finally, I really like that I can write LateX documents in Rstudio and integrate R code into them.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

I think it's a quick and easy to use tool. The IDE is very intuitive and easy to adapt to. You do not need to learn a lot of things to use this tool. Any programmer and a person with knowledge or R can quick use this tool without issues.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Implementation

Alteryx Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Alternatives Considered

It has much more data connections and flexibility but writing queries manually is typically more flexible. It stacks up very high. Good data, Alteryx and Tableau, and a user can be prepared for an impromptu meeting and make a big impact. I haven't used anything like Alteryx for a direct comparison since they have a pretty unique piece of the market.

I like the simplicity of Rstudio, and besides the obvious point that PyCharm is an IDE for python, I find Rstudio much more intuitive. Plotting is better, Rstudio is much easier to customize, and PyCharm tends to take a long time to load. However, I have not experienced as much crashing with PyCharm as with Rstudio.

Return on Investment

  • The ease of use of this tool allows your data team to get off the ground quickly and efficiently.

  • R has a vast [amonut] help documentation, description of packages and functions. It is difficult to find specific information at any given time.
  • R is an online programming language of command, which does not involve the use of menus like other statistical programs, this makes many people who are not familiar with programming
  • It is very difficult to migrate to R. But this is more than a disadvantage, because programming will better understand the basis of statistics and data analysis, compared to other people who do not use R.
