Alteryx Analytics

Well suited: if an organization already has a lot of running ETLs or pipelines but need to systemize them, Alteryx is a good choice. It would be good to figure out how well Alteryx would be harmonized with the existing components, but in a general sense, it may be well harmonized. Less appropriate: Alteryx is good for "automation", but some data developers and analysts may prefer to remain and keep using SQL tools. One should be careful of not just adding "one more layer or tool" into the existing pipeline and make it more complicated to manage.

SAS Advanced Analytics

SAS Advance Analytics is well suited for data that is visual. Data where you want to see multiple graphs and models are good for this software. However, if your data is more descriptive this may not be the best program. SAS is well suited for data where you need to make comparisons on the feasibility of two different programs. Data that can be compared is perfect for this software.

Pros

  • User-friendly interface - the tool structure and general workspace are very easy to pick up on. Short learning curve from "no experience" to "beginner user".
  • Standardization - modules/wizards allow a single tool to generate results for multiple clients, all through the use of a few actions/inputs.
  • Analytics - wide range of statistical analytics tools makes it easy for a user to look at data and provide simple summary statistics, while also having the ability to build advanced regression models.

If SAS Enterprise Guide is utilized any beginning user will be able to shorten the learning curve. This is allow the user a plethora of basic capabilities until they can utilize coding to expand their needs in manipulating and presenting data. SAS is also dedicated to expanding this environment so it is ever growing.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

SAS probably has the most market saturation out of all of the analytics software worldwide. They are in every industry and they are knowledgable about every industry. They are always available to take questions, solve issues, and discuss a company's needs. A company that buys SAS software has a dedicated representative that is there for all of their needs.

Although nothing is perfect, SAS is almost there. The software can handle billions of rows of data without a glitch and runs at a quick pace regardless of what the user wants to perform. SAS products are made to handle data so performance is of their utmost important. The software is created to run things as efficiently as SAS software can to maximize performance.

SAS has regional and national conferences that are dedicated to expanding users' knowledge of the software and showing them what changes and additions they are making to the software. There are user groups in most of the major cities that also provide multi-day seminars that focus on specific topics for education. If online training isn't the best way for the user, there is ample in-person training available.

There are online videos, live classes, and resource material which makes training very easy to access. However, nothing is circumstantial so applying your training can get tricky if the user is performing complex tasks. When purchasing software, SAS will also allocate education credits so the user(s) can access classes and material online to help expand their knowledge.

Implementation

Alteryx Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.
Dan Chapman profile photo
SAS Advanced Analytics9.0
Based on 1 answer
Ask as many questions you can before the install to understand the process. Since a third party does the installation your company is sort of a passanger and it is easy to get lost in the process. It also helps to have all users and IT support involved in the install to help increase the knowledge as to how SAS runs and what it needs to perform correctly.

Breadth of Deployment

Our company kept it contained in the marketing department. Other departments may not understand it.

Alternatives Considered

Alteryx's UI is fantastic insomuch that training can really be self-driven, albeit with several Google searches a day and visits to the Alteryx community. The other solutions we looked at were much less intuitive and not nearly as flexible, automated, and didn't give you the capability to watch the data be changed through every step of the process like Alteryx can do through browses and data samples.
Joe Root profile photo
R is of course much cheaper (free) than SAS Analytics, and it can do everything SAS Analytics can do and more. It is a much more technical tool than SAS Analytics, which is why some people prefer SAS Analytics.

Doesn't really allow for much collaboration in real time other than sharing flat files with coworkers. Have to utilize a 3rd party cloud hosting platform in order to try to collaborate on a workflow.

It all depends on the type of SAS product the user has. Scaleability differs from product to product, and if the user has SAS Office Analytics the scaleability is quite robust. This software will satisfy the majority of the company's analytic needs for years to come. In addition, if SAS is not meeting the users needs the company can easily find SAS solutions that will.

Return on Investment

  • Alteryx does an excellent job of integrating consumer and spatial data to calculate and visualize things like locations within a certain drive-time radius.
  • For visualization purposes I had to move the data to excel for some decent graphs.
  • It can become very expensive.
No photo available
  • With SAS, I was able to build statistical models from tremendous amounts of transactional data to identify key factors driving the company's business. SAS analysis also provided us great insights into customer segmentations as well.
