Alteryx Analytics

Well suited: if an organization already has a lot of running ETLs or pipelines but need to systemize them, Alteryx is a good choice. It would be good to figure out how well Alteryx would be harmonized with the existing components, but in a general sense, it may be well harmonized. Less appropriate: Alteryx is good for "automation", but some data developers and analysts may prefer to remain and keep using SQL tools. One should be careful of not just adding "one more layer or tool" into the existing pipeline and make it more complicated to manage.

Splunk Enterprise

Splunk is a great data analytics tool for you if you have a large amount of data to analyze. Splunk provides accurate and real-time analysis of data through its dashboard. But if you not quite a technical person or not willing to learn Splunk before using it, I will not recommend it to you. Also, Splunk is less appropriate for static data.

Pros

  • Cleaning datasets
  • Preparing data for analyzing
  • Customer data analytics
  • Transforming data from one format to other
Sanket Bharaswadkar profile photo
  • Allow for separation of control where we don't let some employees have access to production but still can diagnose issues.
  • Common location to go for all logs even if the logs themselves aren't in the same place.
  • Ability to ingest logs from different locations without having to change the code to put logs in a certain place (pro and con).

Cons

  • Poor documentation
  • Costly
  • Overkill for simple tasks
  • Not many options for data visualization
Sanket Bharaswadkar profile photo
  • Even though there is a search tool as a help function, you still have to read through many documentation to find the answers you're looking for and sometimes you don't find it. The help function in Splunk could be improved to be more intuitive or have a built-in help per report, panel or dashboard.
  • Creating a Splunk dashboard is rather straightforward however, customization is not. Splunk could be improved to provide more tools or features for customization such as adding colors and font options for text and graphs or graphics.
  • My dashboard has a lot of useful information and I want the important panels and reports at the top but there is no easy way to do this. Perhaps Splunk could be improved to allow features such as adding URL links to other dashboards or some other clever way to emphasize the important data in my dashboard without compromising space.

Likelihood to Renew

Alteryx Analytics6.5

Alteryx has become integral to my job and to the expectation of upper management. They have now become accustomed to the lightening quick turnaround that Alteryx can provide. Not renewing Alteryx would take our department, and me, back to what would seem like the dark ages. Additionally, Alteryx (the company) is very aggressive in improving and upgrading Alteryx (the program) on a continual basis. It is very clear that they are in constant search for new features, capabilities and improvements. They do not rest on their laurels.

Usability

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

You can literally throw in a single word into Splunk and it will pull back all instances of that word across all of your logs for the time span you select (provided you have permission to see that data). We have several users who have taken a few of the free courses from Splunk that are able to pull data out of it everyday with little help at all.

Reliability and Availability

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Support from Splunk to our company is extremely good . Our team developed many dash boards , reports and alerts in Splunk which saved so many hours of our development time and made us very very efficient . We are extremely happy with current functionality provided by Splunk and have no complaints at all . I would definitely recommend it to everyone

Implementation

Alteryx Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Breadth of Deployment

Our company kept it contained in the marketing department. Other departments may not understand it.

Alternatives Considered

Talend is primarily for data integration and has quite advanced capabilities. But the user has to be more technical. Alteryx makes the process simple and any user can make use of its features.Tableau was a good choice for data visualization. We needed beautiful charts and ways to represent data. Alteryx falls short in this aspect.
Sanket Bharaswadkar profile photo
We have also used ELK (Elastic Logstash Kibana) with some benefits, but Splunk is way better than ELK.We also use AWS CloudWatch for Lambdas that are written in AWS. However CloudWatch is not a replacement for Splunk.

Nice capabilities. Developing and publishing dashboards is very user friendly. After publishing permissions can be assigned based on hierarchy in a particular so you can control who can or who cannot view dashboards.Report distribution can be done very easily as dashboards can be downloaded in the pdf format. Alteryx Analytics' server is pretty secure for paid versions and has a lot of online help as well if you are learning server management.

Data Integration

Unless there's totally different kinds of datasets, it works with any flat file sheets and is very easy to play with data. If you have files in shared folders the run time depends on the size and speed of accessibility as well, but for most part it works really smooth.

Return on Investment

  • Definitely, an increase in employee efficiency. With the right tools and hardware, Alteryx can reduce the processing time significantly.
  • Automation and/or automatic report scheduling frees up a lot of time that can be used elsewhere.
  • Licensing updates are somewhat not handled easily and quite often create issues with modules to run slowly and/or not being active.

  • Increased efficiency in the NOC.
  • Reduction on app/dev lifecycles
  • Reduction on MTTR on most outage scenarios
