Alteryx Analytics

I wish I had found and used Alteryx Analytics years ago. Having multiple data sources with a variety of naming conventions for our businesses we spent WEEKS cleaning/reorganizing/renaming fields in our data to be able to consolidate. We did this on one set of reports for one use. Each time we wanted an update this process would need to be repeated. This took tons of useless admin time. Had we had Alteryx we could have created 1 identifier, noted all the different naming conventions or issues, selected the ones we wanted and created the workflow to use it over and over and over again on any data we wanted. Build once - use multiple times. It would have been (and now is) a HUGE time saver. Plus any new anomalies are identified by the program as errors so you can "autocorrect" them in the same workflow. Alteryx is a miracle in my opinion.

Tableau Public

Tableau Public products (for free) work well during the product evaluation phase, as well as for sharing data with partners and the community for no charge. A key question is what security the customer wants with the data, and how frequently the underlying data changes. If the data does not change frequently, and the user is not concerned about securing the data, then Public is a good choice.

Pros

  • Excellent support for the tools through training/white papers and online support.
  • Ease of use - high common sense factor makes the program easy to learn and apply.
  • Compatibility with everything but specifically with commonly used key programs like Tableau.

Cons

  • Sometimes the desktop version of authoring tool crashes! It's been unstable in the previous versions but gets better. Even if it doesn't crash, it used to be slow or not responding.
  • When running several version of database drivers in local machine or server, it is tricky to set up database connections. Often you have to figure out it by googling the problem and solution. There are not many knowledge bases from Alteryx.
  • Alteryx project file creates .bak file automatically. It is useful to prevent for the purpose of back up, sometimes it's not necessary. But it is not changeable for some reason. By default, it always creates backups.

  • Simpler first time integration. Labor intensive first steps in order to get data to operate effectively. I needed to keep re-verifying numbers until I felt the integration was operating correctly.

I personally have moved to a different position that does not require data analysis tools. I really enjoyed working with Alteryx and think it is a great tool, but have moved to a different organization and role.

In the end, Tableau continues to innovate and deliver new functionality every year. Technical support is good, they also provide user forum(s) where experienced users share their knowledge and insights, as well as assist newer users with specific questions. This space (Business Intelligence) continues to grow and is very competitive with new vendors and products coming out all the time. That said, we've yet to see a product that can match Tableau.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Implementation

Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Start at the end and work backward. Identify the business case / issue and questions the end users have, then identify the data needed, and where to get it.

Alternatives Considered

I have used Tableau Desktop. We selected Alteryx because of the better pricing options they had for our firm. Although Tableau has amazing features like data blending, story designing dashboards, parameters switches, geo coding, etc. Alteryx provides decent solutions in most of these areas as well.Tableau Servers and licenses are very expensive on a per-user basis, and here Alteryx wins hands down.
Kunal Sonalkar profile photo
Tableau's core competency is to create a singular analytics platform and while Google and Microsoft provide viable alternatives, they don't quite match up. Tableau delves deeper into categories than Google and thus doesn't supply deep enough information. Microsoft on the other hand struggles with ease of usability and difficulty in linking highly sophisticated information. In addition, it reads the information more slowly thus decreasing productivity.

Return on Investment

  • Alteryx has significantly improved employee efficiency. It's helped reduce turnaround time by ~30% already and we expect this to to do more as we leverage more of the tools.
  • Alteryx has also been used to automate repetitive processes to free up employees to focus on more of the analytical tasks.
  • The only negative to the business impact is how licenses are handed. They often expire without notice and can negatively affect clients.

  • Quick visualizations.
  • Clean design. If you are a fan of Edward Tufte or Stephen Few, then you favor a lean, clean look. That seems to be Tableau's default. I appreciate that.
