Alteryx Analytics

Well suited: if an organization already has a lot of running ETLs or pipelines but need to systemize them, Alteryx is a good choice. It would be good to figure out how well Alteryx would be harmonized with the existing components, but in a general sense, it may be well harmonized. Less appropriate: Alteryx is good for "automation", but some data developers and analysts may prefer to remain and keep using SQL tools. One should be careful of not just adding "one more layer or tool" into the existing pipeline and make it more complicated to manage.

Talend Open Studio

If you need to design the data flow architecture while working with big data tools, Talend Open Studio is a great way to do so. This is also true for designing data quality checks and monitoring real time data flow. On the other hand, I would not recommend using Talend for handling less volume of data or for performing trivial or fewer data operations.

Pros

  • It can independently generate required analytics instead of having to require specialists.
  • The ability to read and write in a multitude of formats: from Excel, Access tables, Tableau and Teradata to MapInfo, ESRI, Google Earth, etc.
  • Single drag and drop workflow instead of multiple tools.
No photo available
  • System Integration: you want to pull data from SQL Server and load it into SalesForce? Easy. You need to export data from a COTS, encrypt and transmit it via FTP to an external vendor. Simple.
  • Report Production: while Talend Open Studio is not primarily a reporting system, it is temptingly easy to extract data, dump it in Excel and email it to a business user. These will not be sophisticated, graphical reports, but will allow you to produce simple reports in minutes.
  • Data Transformation and Processing: between your primary input and primary out, you have virtually unlimited ability to manipulate and transform your data in a custom workflow. Talend comes with components for aggregating, filtering, sorting. It also comes with more advanced components for merging or splitting input and output, pinging a server, and implementing custom rules and code.
  • Data Quality and MDM: Talend includes many components for cleansing and managing reference and transnational data. Data masking de-duplication, fuzzy matching, and MDM functions can be implemented with clicking and dragging components.

Cons

  • You cannot as a novice just play around and get started. The learning curve is very steep, rewarding, but steep. I can't help but wonder if the product would not benefit from a "light" version for less data-mining accustomed business managers.
Mika Silverman profile photo
  • Talend Open Studio does not have enough components to do Deduplication and fuzzy match using machine learning.
  • Talend Open studio is not highly available and makes it tough to run Tier 1 applications.
  • Talend Open Studio does not provide any good ways to do unit testing of the components.

We've developed a working partnership with Alteryx. As an enablement suite, we're continuing to innovate and deliver great products with use of Alteryx in our solutions. Alteryx use expands to our global product development teams and is in use in multiple parts of our organization. Alteryx also delivers Experian demographic content to other clients in their product offering. We're highly likely to renew, but that decision is way above my pay grade.

There is no licence requirement for Talend Open Studio. So, this is not relevant question. However, if you are asking whether we will use Talend in future. Yes. We will continue to use it. It's very powerful free tool which caters to all our extra, transform, load capabilities. We just love Talend for it's great functionality and ease of use.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

Reliability and Availability

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Talend Open Studio is free and we are not using the enterprise version which comes with licence and support. So, mostly depend on the open source community for any issues that we face. The document is good and we didn't have to use any support so far. We did evaluate the enterprise version and so far sticking to the free version.

Implementation

Alteryx Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Breadth of Deployment

Our company kept it contained in the marketing department. Other departments may not understand it.

Alternatives Considered

I had used RapidMiner before and Alteryx is way ahead of it in every aspect. I also have used IBM Watson to some extent and preferred Alteryx because of its blending capabilities, ease of use for everyone on the team and the ability to easily use R with it (as R was the second most popular language we used). I have heard IBM SPSS has some features better than Alteryx but haven't had a chance to use it as yet. At this point though we do not think we are moving anywhere away from Alteryx.

SSIS is a great tool in itself and more easier. But, debugging is better done in Talend.

Collaboration and Sharing

It’s easy to give licenses and work amongst teams. Once a report is created it can be shared with colleagues who might want to use the processes built but add more relevant parameters to the data. An example might be a GL report ran by finance but procurement could use the same report and limit to PPV for their own analysis of a unique cost

Data Integration

Alteryx Analytics8.9

Merging data is easiest among any platform I’ve used. The data sources available is broad and I understand Alteryx is constantly adding to the sources of data used by their customers. I particularly like the ability to schedule reports out of Alteryx. This makes it valuable as tool to do research and ad hoc analysis but also reduce the time spent actually running and delivering reports pre-built

Return on Investment

  • It gets the job done fast.
  • It lends itself well for people with a less-technical aptitude to understand the data process.
  • It empower the user to come up with any possible solution to a problem.
Nick Lensing profile photo
  • It was easy to quickly ramp up a team of ETL developers without prior knowledge on ETL jobs
  • We could move millions of records into CRM systems within a span of a day as part of a large data migration project.
  • We did not have a scheduler as part of the open studio. We had to build a quartz based scheduler to run the jobs on schedule and on demand
