Alteryx Analytics

I wish I had found and used Alteryx Analytics years ago. Having multiple data sources with a variety of naming conventions for our businesses we spent WEEKS cleaning/reorganizing/renaming fields in our data to be able to consolidate. We did this on one set of reports for one use. Each time we wanted an update this process would need to be repeated. This took tons of useless admin time. Had we had Alteryx we could have created 1 identifier, noted all the different naming conventions or issues, selected the ones we wanted and created the workflow to use it over and over and over again on any data we wanted. Build once - use multiple times. It would have been (and now is) a HUGE time saver. Plus any new anomalies are identified by the program as errors so you can "autocorrect" them in the same workflow. Alteryx is a miracle in my opinion.

Mathematica

It will be very well suited when you are developing anything around mathematics as it can solve almost everything mathematics from calculus to algebra. Also, visualising data with this tool is very easy and efficient. Now, it also provides the speech and image API, so you can also use this tool while doing something around speech and images like speech to text conversion or finding some information out of images etc.

Pros

  • Data ingestion: Alteryx is capable of connecting with a multitude of data sources from SQL databases to cloud-hosted solutions like Salesforce, Tableau, or Google Analytics. Also supports OleDB & ODBC connections.
  • Dynamic data munging: Alteryx has a great variety of processing tools to clean and prep data including: dedupe, formulas, joins, union, sort... Performing these functions really quickly on even moderately equipped laptops or desktops. It's dynamic in that it can easily handle changes in data by allowing extra columns to flow through.
  • Macros: have a process that you are consistently running in separate workflows? Build a macro, be it a batch or iterative, Alteryx can do it. I've built 40-50 macros and use at least 4+ in every workflow I design so data is handled the same way in every workflow for consistency and cutting down on copy/pastes.

  • It is a very powerful tool for data visualisation and computation.
  • Solving mathematics mainly calculus is very easy. Visualising the solution step by step is a great thing you can see in this tool.
  • It's easy to do heavy computation like finding the inverse of a big matrix, doing matrix multiplications etc.
  • One of the best features is that it can also understand natural language. So, you can write a query in simple English and it can interpret that and can find a solution for you.

Cons

  • I've had issues with the scheduler tool getting frozen or stuck in previous versions. For about the last 2-3 months the latest software version has been much more reliable. Previously I had to restart the Alteryx service on my machine at least once a week, which meant my workflows weren't running while the service had been stuck and data wasn't moving.
  • Some of the connectors, like the Tableau Online connector, should become supported by Alteryx. The online community is fantastic and has created a ton of useful macros and it would be great if Alteryx would adopt, support, and enhance some of the most widely used and useful.

  • The first and the biggest con is that it takes a long time to learn this language. Writing a mathematical equation is not so easy in this tool. And its documentation is very big and sometimes I feel that the documentation is confusing.
  • Pricing for this tool is too high. Not everyone can afford to buy this product and the free trial has lots of limitation.
  • And I think the last con is that its interpreter is slow.

I personally have moved to a different position that does not require data analysis tools. I really enjoyed working with Alteryx and think it is a great tool, but have moved to a different organization and role.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Implementation

Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Alternatives Considered

Alteryx was surely a better option compared to RapidMiner but when compared against IBM SPSS it is behind for advanced analytical techniques and model scoring, visualization capabilities and neural networks functionalities. SPSS also has a diverse range of analytical techniques and models compared to Alteryx. RapidMiner provides a Studio component for design, a Server component, a Hadoop connector called Radoop and a component for stream processing.

I think IBM Watson Analytics is good alternative to Wolfram Mathematica. A few advantages of Mathematica over IBM Analytics is that Mathematica comes with a lot of inbuilt things like neural networks, predictive analysis geometry. And IBM analytics does not show the step by step solution of mathematical problem. Other than this, one product which is a good alternative to Mathematica is SageMath. But SageMath doesn't have a wide variety of tools available with it. And visualisation is not good in SageMath.

Return on Investment

  • It gets the job done fast.
  • It lends itself well for people with a less-technical aptitude to understand the data process.
  • It empower the user to come up with any possible solution to a problem.
Nick Lensing profile photo
  • This tool helps to visualise the mathematical problem in a very easy way. It can show you the step by step solution to integral problems.
  • But when you are using the tool it may limit your understanding of the basic problem. And you may miss out on understanding the basic of mathematics itself.
  • It helped me a lot to do my thing in a very easy way. And understanding the data is also easy in this as you can easily visualize it.
