Alteryx Analytics

More often than not, Alteryx can handle any situation or scenario thrown at it. Some may take a little more "trickery" along the way, but for the most part it is fairly easy to get from point A (data) to point B (results/report). And the nice thing is is that there is more than one way to produce the same result - two people with two different mindsets can ultimately create the same thing, but do so in a way that is better suited for their skill level.

Mathematica

It will be very well suited when you are developing anything around mathematics as it can solve almost everything mathematics from calculus to algebra. Also, visualising data with this tool is very easy and efficient. Now, it also provides the speech and image API, so you can also use this tool while doing something around speech and images like speech to text conversion or finding some information out of images etc.

Pros

Alteryx Analytics

  • Alteryx handles data imports very well and give great feedback on the import process.
  • Alteryx is incredibly feature rich. I never found myself unable to manipulate data in the way I had hoped.
  • Alteryx provides great formats for export as well.

Mathematica

  • You can stay in one environment as you progress from idea to prototype to production code to deployment; this hastens the development cycle at every step along the way
  • You can take advantage of the thousands (> 6000) functions that perform many math and logic transformations that are common to analysis today
  • The notebook interface is a very natural way to program, and allows code to be interwoven with explanatory text.
  • Mathematica is one of the most stable software platforms in the world, in existence for 30 years.

Cons

Alteryx Analytics

  • Alteryx seeks feedback from the user community. We regularly provide Alteryx with detailed requirements for supporting our data processing needs and Alteryx consistently delivers required functionality in their software updates.
  • Alteryx is rapidly expanding support for advanced analytics and delivery of consumable analytic tools. Alteryx can call other applications if necessary, but can also run R natively. Alteryx has been working both on expanding their delivered modeling toolset as well as enhancing their software to improve the performance of R.
  • While parallel processing is performed, there are times that I'd like to see more of it. Alteryx makes it easy to browse data within modules, but the browse output (tabular) is not readily filterable/sortable. Improvements to the user interface would be welcomed.
  • Alteryx allows users to schedule individual jobs for execution, but doesn't provide advanced scheduling tools to establish workflows where jobs executions have outside dependencies.

Mathematica

  • It is, unfortunately, quite slow compared to, say, C code implementation of numerical routines. (However, getting a routine up and running is still vastly faster in Mathematica, so the tradeoff is worth it.)
  • New functionality is sometimes not implemented as fully as it could be: MeshRegions are still fairly limited.
  • The underlying core doesn't work equally well across platforms: things that run fine on Mac crash on Windows.

We've developed a working partnership with Alteryx. As an enablement suite, we're continuing to innovate and deliver great products with use of Alteryx in our solutions. Alteryx use expands to our global product development teams and is in use in multiple parts of our organization. Alteryx also delivers Experian demographic content to other clients in their product offering. We're highly likely to renew, but that decision is way above my pay grade.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Implementation

There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Alternatives Considered

Alteryx Analytics

We tested this against several COTS packages and found Alteryx to be a more cost effective solution that could be deployed to a variety of user types

Mathematica

We have evaluated and are using in some cases the Python language in concert with the Jupyter notebook interface. For UI, we using libraries like React to create visually stunning visualizations of such models.Mathematica compares favorably to this alternative in terms of speed of development. Mathematica compares unfavorably to this alternative in terms of license costs.

Return on Investment

Alteryx Analytics

  • Definitely increased employee efficiency.
  • The company was able to offer more products to better serve the customers. Site selection with a click, more detailed segmentation, etc.
  • The program itself made the job more enjoyable. The ease of the software and also "Lego"-like interface made going to work fun.

Mathematica

  • Mathematica is our "go to" environment for developing solutions for our clients, so I suppose you could say that it is solely responsible for our revenues. On occasion we do use other platforms but Mathematica is a core component of our offer to clients.
