Destinations with both membership/donations and admissions will benefit from Altru's capability to track revenue from all angles. As a pretty robust system, you'll find many ways to utilize Altru including through mailings and mailing lists, major donor moves management, merchandise, and online forms.

Raiser's Edge NXT

Great for a donor management system. Keeps data accessible, and reports are fairly easy to pull. Sometimes users have confusion on which reports they are trying to get. So much information, so many options - pros and cons. If you have experienced advancement personnel and a designated database administrator, this is an awesome program that can provide so much detail.

Pros

Altru

  • Ticketing and tracking many different types of admission sales including group, facility rental, individual tickets, and class registration.
  • Membership management, including membership card mailing, recurring memberships, and renewal reminders.
  • Being an all-encompassing database rather than forcing you to use multiple databases.
  • Great customer service and client support, including ongoing updates to better the system.
  • Has a merchandise inventory management system.

Raiser's Edge NXT

  • Ease of use.
  • Truly mobile responsive.
  • Best of both worlds - you get the magical deliciousness of true, cloud-based CRM software and (when you switch back to traditional database still available via Citrix) you still have all the power for your key data-heavy positions and tasks (gift processors, custom report writers, annual report, mailings, pledge reminders).
  • No more servers to replace/update, backups to verify, windows machines to keep up-to-date and virus-free.

Cons

Altru

  • Could use more reporting filters rather than depending on us knowing how to build a query correctly.
  • Limitations on emailing tickets to patrons.
  • Limitations on refunding capabilities if multiple refunds are needed on the same order.
  • Could improve outward-facing online forms and the ease with which customers build a shopping cart and update their own account.
Jennifer Dunmire profile photo

Raiser's Edge NXT

  • For data-heavy users and processes (data entry, gift processing, thank you letters, reports), you now must use Citrix for the traditional database view and those paper-based processes and tasks are made more clunky than when you have traditional Raiser's Edge installed on premise.
  • You can't fully customize the interface. You can move data tiles around but can't build completely custom views.
  • Built-in analytics are great but I think you need to be able to have more control and create your own KPIs and measures that are relevant just to your own organization.
  • Not sure if you can request a .BAK file of your RE database for restoration and testing on a local machine once your RE database has been converted to NXT.

We evaluated RE NXT for the long haul. We feel it is a product that will grow along with us as an organization and it is meeting our needs.

The raisers edge product has exceeded all expectations in both the tools it provides to assist in our fundraising efforts as well as the service behind it. We are blessed to have blackbaud as a partner and feel that they are very much a part of our success.

When outages come, they are definitely felt! They come a few times a year, and can be quite a hassle. Sometimes the program isn't completely down, but is still slowed right down and creates complications. Not sure what the solution is for this, but ideal if the company can sort it out

It's fine. It's not the fastest, but not the slowest either. The real limitations come in how difficult it is to pull reports, or how to segment parts of information. This isn't an issue of not knowing how to do something - we've followed up with staff and there are actual limitations that make work harder

There are times when there are long line ups and can be incredibly slow and responsive, on very critical things. Glad there is support services, but they could be improved. There are also the larger issues with RE that are slowly being addressed, and very slowly being added to RE NXT from RE 7, but still work to do

Raiser's Edge has really good training. Some classes should be geared to the user's experience so more advanced users can by pass some of the newer users questions. But I like that the instructors take time for the new users.

Blackbaud was with us every step of the way during the migration of our data to the newer version of the software. They made it as easy as possible, and the huge task that it was was made much easier with their help.

I've worked with Salesforce, Veracross, EveryAction, Nationbuilder, Evertrue and other products and each has its own strengths. What no one else currently offers is the "best of both worlds" scenario that exists with Raiser's Edge NXT. On the one hand you have fast, responsive web-based solutions with built in analytics that get you up and running right away. However, you can also still access the software in the traditional database view via a virtual Windows machine in the Citrix environment for data-intensive tasks, and the 20 years of built-in reports and solutions that have been built for Raiser's Edge. I don't know of any other solution that offers both the web and traditional software interface options.

New features are constantly being added to Raiser's Edge NXT that expand its capabilities. Features such as constituent mapping and easily accessible actions allow for more in-depth analysis of existing constituents. The future ability to manipulate soft-credits and customize reporting dashboards will make NXT even more attractive to our fundraisers and executives. It's great to see that the software is evolving.

Return on Investment

Altru

  • We've had some minor issues with donors in multiple membership programs receiving the incorrect communications which querying should have eliminated, but on the whole, it's no more or less than with any system.

  • Without a database we'd be up a creek. It's hard to evaluate or compare to what other options there are, because there really isn't any competition in this field for our size of org.
