Amaxus

Amaxus is well suited as a development platform and content management system for companies who have a dedicated, experienced development team because it has such complex functionality. It is not well suited for companies whose main content updater will be a person with limited development experience, because it is so hard to learn and understand how to use.

Why give it a 10? I shudder at the thought of using anything else to manage and deliver websites reliably to our nationwide audiences. With our very minimal staff of software engineers (with great personalities) we have been able to innovate and satisfy our internal newsroom demands, which are high to the extreme. Our team is very agile and has adapted well to the changing times in the past 4 years that I have been senior software engineer, and team lead. The 10 is for flexibility, extensibility, reliability, and the freedom we experience as developers.

Pros

Amaxus

  • There is a lot of flexibility and power with what you can do.
  • The client has a lot of power to make changes on their own without needing a development team.

Clickability

  • The customization from page to page is the best I've seen in a CMS. Each page could have its own template and content rendering if necessary
  • The UI is fairly straight forward and easy to use. It can also be customized by user role.
  • The Velocity template creation is easily done through the console. No need to FTP files to a server.
  • The version control of each content item or template is handled through the CMS. No terminal needed.

Cons

Amaxus

  • There is a huge learning curve for developers. All our new website builds were going beyond the timeline because of the learning curve.
  • It is very complex and teaching our clients how to use it required several training sessions.

Clickability

  • It doesn't allow testing to people who do not have passwords. You must create an account to test in staging. I would like to be able to show someone a website in staging without them needing to log in.
  • I would like the process for static websites to be more streamlined. I don't like creating a template then create content for a website that won't be changed by updated content.
  • You have a useful resource pdf. Which I use all the time. I would also like to see more useful tools to help the learning curve for Clickability. Video's, webcasts, or white pages to help with the steep learning curve that Clickability has.
  • Add easy access to social sites for sharing and posting.

As mentioned in the last questions we are going to use a competitor brand next year. I think the issues are trying to find and fix problems from the previous programer. The steep learning curve and lack of mobile and social sharing capabilities. Things that I like are the strength of the programing which comes with a trade off. The ease for those who don't know markup to make updates to the website. Clickability isn't the easiest and can be difficult to find the content that you are interested in. We will not be using it next year.

I have used 8 other CMS at this point and I only found one other to be easier to use and they are not for this type of market.

I found that some agents were better then others, usually you have an account representative and that I would consider level 1 support. To get really complex answers you need to talk with an engineer.

Have a developer on staff to work with them, even if you are not designing your site yourself.

Alternatives Considered

Amaxus

I have used an in-house CMS which was very simple and only allowed the user to update very basic templated content, and I have used Sitecore, which is sort of like a middle-of-the-road. Sitecore is great because it allows for the user to have a lot of control over templates and updating content, but it's not so complex that it is very difficult and time-consuming to learn how to use, like Amaxus.

I think it is on par with what I did with Sharepoint. Sharepoint was not the easiest and you have to do many things twice to get it to actually display. I think the easiest I have used is Wordpress. They make mobile very easy and allow for quick changes and are very social friendly. The issues I have with Wordpress is that they don't have the power of the Clickability programing. Drupal I haven't used but we are going to start using them next year. Going forward it sounds like it will be more streamlined and allow for easy mobile and social sharing with Drupal

Return on Investment

Amaxus

  • It has a negative impact because it put us back on our timelines.
  • It had a negative impact because our customers didn't like the learning curve to use it.
  • It had a negative impact because it caused so much stress among our team to learn it.

  • I am not aware of that information.
