Amaxus

Amaxus is well suited as a development platform and content management system for companies who have a dedicated, experienced development team because it has such complex functionality. It is not well suited for companies whose main content updater will be a person with limited development experience, because it is so hard to learn and understand how to use.

Salesforce CMS

Salesforce is the big dog in the CRM industry. It's used almost everywhere so it's easy to pick up and use wherever you might go. So training on the system is really easy. Oftentimes, it's just a matter of learning how an organization uses it to their means. I think for a smaller company, there are probably more affordable, more maneuverable options. However, larger companies can benefit from the number of customizations and integrations Salesforce allows for.

Pros

Amaxus

  • There is a lot of flexibility and power with what you can do.
  • The client has a lot of power to make changes on their own without needing a development team.

Salesforce CMS

  • Easy to use, just like Salesforce's other products. Many users can sit down and figure it out in no time, and with a little training become power users.
  • Fast and secure - Salesforce is a leader in the cloud world so you get consistently fast results and security that is top notch in the industry.
  • Accessible from anywhere - if you use cloud CMS already this is a no-brainer, but for those that do in-house CMS still, this is a major difference. Mobile access from anywhere on the planet without a VPN is something you just can't do without the cloud.

Cons

Amaxus

  • There is a huge learning curve for developers. All our new website builds were going beyond the timeline because of the learning curve.
  • It is very complex and teaching our clients how to use it required several training sessions.

Salesforce CMS

  • Trailhead - I have run into several issues with Trailhead articles directing me to an Error 404 page, and with inconsistent product naming conventions (Community Cloud vs Experience Cloud etc) which make for a confusing journey when implementing.
  • Salesforce Inbox - the integration for Gmail/Salesforce for logging emails is rather archaic and step-heavy. It would be ideal to implement some AI that can detect the account & opportunity outright, as well as fast-track the ability to create new contacts.

Once set up, it is decently easy for users to navigate. It can be difficult at times to build reports and dashboards if you aren't well versed in Salesforce. It seems like you have to read a manual to do a lot of stuff within Salesforce - this is largely due to how complex the tool is.

I'm not sure - we have hired a person/team that are Salesforce Admin so when I have a question or need support I go in-house. But, I know Salesforce has incredible L+D and trainings available for free to help users develop in their skillsets.

Alternatives Considered

Amaxus

I have used an in-house CMS which was very simple and only allowed the user to update very basic templated content, and I have used Sitecore, which is sort of like a middle-of-the-road. Sitecore is great because it allows for the user to have a lot of control over templates and updating content, but it's not so complex that it is very difficult and time-consuming to learn how to use, like Amaxus.

Salesforce CMS

Salesforce has a wide variety of services and its user interface was easy to understand and use. Our teams [thought] Salesforce to be better. When we were comparing the features as per our Marketing and Branding teams needs and uses, Salesforce came out on the top.

Return on Investment

Amaxus

  • It has a negative impact because it put us back on our timelines.
  • It had a negative impact because our customers didn't like the learning curve to use it.
  • It had a negative impact because it caused so much stress among our team to learn it.

Salesforce CMS

  • It helps us to keep track of any potential conflicts between sales organizations.
  • It allows us to have robust reporting for every sales team and the overall organization.
  • It gives us a solid platform for our day-to-day work rather than using multiple software.
